wires removed after 3 years?

Has anyone here had their sternal wires removed more than 3 yrs after surgery? My wires have been bothering me at the top of my long sternal incision, and am wondering about getting them taken out.
I had it done after the 2nd surgery, but it was done 7 mos after surgery. I keep forgetting to ask my cardio about this, so thought I might get a few replies here.
