Ok you guys: who lives where there is never snow and winter is just an excuse to wear that really cool UnderArmour that shows off our fabulous middle aged physiques? It has snowed twice now in NJ and I am so sad to put my bike on trainers in the basement where only my dog Luke and I can watch the training hours click by as we ride to MTV and VH1 (or Coach Troy on our Spinervals workout tapes)
How does everyone keep going in the Winter? The Indy 500 looms large as well as the possibilty of my butt looming large!

Hey Laura,
Part of the reason I moved from NY to Atl was to get away from the cold. I just couldn't get into snow sports anymore. Down here I can play outside all year. I use the general rule of thumb, under 50 gloves and leg warmers, under 30 hat and ski gloves, under 20 go to sleep. Under 30 happens rarely down here.

Enjoy your spinervals.:D

Hiya Laura

You could try this place I know called Perth, Australia!!!:D

Great weather, lots of space :D has a fair few physical endurance events and doesnt often get below the 40 degree Fahrenheit range....

and the closest thing we get to snow is opening the freezer.

I dont envy you the indoors training - its never quite the same as being outdoors. All the same... keep up with the motivation for your training. I'll be thinking of you as I ride in the sun!:)

Well David and Russell, I'm reading your posts as I sit here psyching myself up for the 5 miles in 28 degree slightly snowy NJ. Never been to Perth, but I take solace in knowing that summer in Atlanta is pretty darn hot!
Laura

Yeah, and I awoke this morning to find the outside temp 2 degrees F, and thought "Pretty soon it will get COLD here in Chicago!" Winters here run from wimpy to nasty/treacherous, but I've moved my running indoors for the past few years (treadmill at health club), so the weather only bothers me getting there and back. . .

Laura - I get through the winter using treadmills at my local gym. I won't buy one because to get a really good one, it's cheaper to pay gym dues than for me to invest in what I would really want. I know some runners have a hard time with treadmill but if you can get past that, they really do work! One of our past female Olympian U.S. marathoners lives in Alaska and did 75%of her training on a treadmill. Mark

25 inches and piling up

25 inches and piling up

I live in the Lake effect zone of Western New York. With a recent 25" as of this morning, I don't mind being cooped up for the next few weeks to allow my sternum to heal.So if anyone is looking for winter fun.....Look around Western New York, and I'm sure you'll find tons to do. Snowmobiles fly up my road all the time....and even a snowplow everyonce in a while.Anyway....I'm listening to all of you and hunkerin' down...taking it easy. Talk to you all soon.Take care. Tim

oh dear oh dear - I wish i could experience something like a winter (a white xmas for a start..).

where i live, the temp rarely goes below 30 degrees during day time and it is humid! I dont think I have done anything outdoor since my surgery :((

so the 'kick' comes from visitng various gyms for a change....

I'm going SKIING!

I'm going SKIING!

First time in three years (I had to stop because I was getting dizzy on the slopes -- I couldn't understand why, and neither could my regular doc. Three years later -- DUH, a leaky valve, high altitude, heavy exertion...).

Anyway, off to Jay Peak for three days. I am PSYCHED!! It will literally be one year to the day since my valve repair!

It was in the mid 60's when I ran last night and I was forced to wear my long-sleeve dry-wick Nike running shirt. Life is so difficult here in Florida...;)

Mark, Mark, Mark - I detect a little SMIRKING here and on your other post!!!!!

It's cold here - but beautiful with the sun shining on the sparkling snow from yesterday. Oh, yeah - I have to go scrape off my car so I can go to cardiac rehab. argh.

Who me? Never!

(I did spend 30 some years freezing & shoveling snow in northern Indiana, and then three years in Rochester, NY, so I've paid my dues to some extent. All you Northerners miss out on our fun stuff like hurricanes, alligators, sharks, red tide, fire ants, killer bees, and the like. Almost stepped on a Ringneck snake on the sidewalk outside of Church this week. Plus I have to mow my grass year-round - still beats shoveling snow, I guess. :D )

Yeah, you guys have quite the variety down yonder. You left out the flying cockroaches. yeccch.

I became personally acquainted with fire ants on a trip to Arkansas a couple years ago. That was decidedly unpleasant.

And I agree that the payoff for putting up with the rest of the stuff is great winter weather. And since I grew up in Oswego, I know what you mean about paying your dues in Rochester. Way more snow to shovel than midwesterners can imagine!!!

Actually I was slightly concerned about the heat during the summer as well. The reality is far different. It doesn't get that much hotter than where you are. We rarely have days over 100 and just a few in the 90's. The big difference is we stay in the 70's and 80's more often. If you go out in the morning it's nice and cool and I always ride between 8am and 11am. All in all I would rather deal with the heat than the cold.

I ran in ankle deep snow for about 3 miles of my 8 mile run today. Sorta like sand only colder...... David,I do sense you are teasing me about Atlanta ans it's cooler hot days and Mark, well I was just visiting Florida and needed a leather jacket for the evenings!
