OR IS THAT SCREAM!!!!!!!!

I have REJOINED the work force. I have completed my first week (off tomorrow and every other Friday). I am having to RE-LEARN the patience of dealing with stupid rules and even some STUPID people. I have been fighting for four days trying to get into the office network. That story is for another day. Here is my story about how all this came about.

The Lord continues to richly bless me. As some of you remember, just before my OHS I was laid off work. With my wife working and my military retirement we were able to survive. My wife had an exceptional health insurance plan which covered almost all the medical expenses we experienced leading up to and through the OHS. Coupled with my less than generous Military Medical plan (Tricare--?Tri? meaning three?they only covered as a last resort and not much at that) we came through this (SO FAR?FINGERS CROSSED) without much additional personal debt.

Of course, as some of you have discovered not too many places want to hire over 55 folks. They won?t tell you that's the reason (IT?S AGAINST THE LAW) but most of the time you can?t even get through the front door, must less the back. But to draw the little bit of state unemployment reimbursement you must TRY to find something. To this end, I submitted many job applications; most of the time received no response back at all. Others told me I was either TOO qualified or not qualified enough.

Well, in December of 2005 I get a call from the Marine Corps Base where my wife works wanting to know if I would be interested in being considered for a GS-5 Supply Tech job. My wife working on the base had nothing to do with the job offer?it was based on an application I had submitted a long time ago and had forgotten about. I said ?SURE? figuring I had a snowballs chance in H**L of hearing anything back. Well, in January I receive a call from the personnel office wanting to know if I would be interested in ACCEPTING a Supply Technician job with the Marine Corp Base in Albany, Georgia. I thought they were calling me to let me know I was being CONSIDERED for the position. I asked when I would be interviewed for the job position. After a long pause, the woman said I had been accepted based on my application and the job was mine if I wanted it. Talk about a job just landing in your lap!!!!!!!

I?ve sorta missed the military life since I retired in 1993 (I lived military for 26 years!!!) and this puts me back in?on the civilian side of course. I guess it will cut in to my VR.COM time but I WILL be logging on as time permits (SORRY MARY AND ROSS). So another chapter opens in my life.

I post this to let folks out there know there can be a life AFTER OHS. Thanks for ?listening?.

May God Bless,

Danny

*question to Ross*

Ross, did Danny ask your permission before taking this job?

*pregnant pause*

Just as I thought.

Danny, quit counting your chickens before they hatch.

You haven't heard from the Final authority yet!;) ;)

Danny, you sound so excited about your new job and I wish you much luck and happiness.

Life after OHS - hell, yes (sorry - emphasis needed).  ;) My life actually got so much better after. I went back to college, worked my way up to the highest position a woman had ever had at my company, requested and got transferred to Los Angeles, and climbed a couple of other corporate ladders. I also had a third OHS during all this time.

I am still going strong although out of the big corporation world.

I would hope anyone who has OHS takes advantage of the second chance they have been given and kicks butt.

May God continue to bless -

Just wanted to say "well done" on the new job. I'm sure it must have been disappointing to receive rejection letters from the other applications...and then this job falls into your lap!

As they say...."What's for you, won't go by you".

Really. I don't know whether to be happy or mad. Being I know what it's like to pay bills with money that isn't yet there, I guess happy. Hmm, yeah. Happy!

ALBANY! You're working in ALBANY? Where is Richland, anyway? I was born at Hopeful, below Camilla. Got family in Albany and all round those parts.

That base has been there a very long time. When I was a kid, I remember those little planes flying over our house (quite a way from Albany) as they trained to take out the enemy. What a treat it was for us to see actual airplanes; we didn't have an idea of the seriousness of it all. Those were the days when you ran to the front door if a car went by! OLDEN days!

The missus going to let you carpool with her?

Danny, great news. Congratulatons on getting your new job!:) :) I've been where you have been being turned down because of age or whatever. Talk about a kick in the old stomach. Good luck and don't forget about us!

Danny. That is awesome news! Congrats!!!

BUT!!! You have a job here, so don't even think about shirking your duties here, dude!!! We'll come after you!! ;)

Now, take a deep breath and GO GET 'EM!!!!

Yeah! Don't make us bring that bubba bus down there to round you up!:p :p :p

First, thank everyone. I might post an ARRRRRRG!!!! in a few weeks after I really get going but right now (only four days---give me a break) everything is good.

Mary,

I don't need your stinking permission:mad: (PLEASE, PLEASE:eek:  ). You don't have the keys to the "BUBBA BUS".:p OOOOOOPS!!!!! Forgot I hot wired it. Must tell the boys to look out for a crazy, scarred up OLD woman trying to steal the bus.:p

Gina,

Sounds like your POST OHS tale might make for a good read too.

Bonnie,

About 60 miles ONE WAY!!! The wife has been doing that since 1993. When we lived in the DC area we were ONLY 25 miles away from work but it took an hour and 15 minutes. I WILL BE off on June 9th. COUGH!!!!! COUGH!!!! Y'all ain't getting rid of me that easy. I got my bikini picked out too. Some kinda poka dot thingie. Mary is bringing Scoot to babysit. Pa-in-law will be taking care of the Dawgs and Kats.

Cort,

No classified on this end this time. I will be a glorified "paper pusher".:D My job will be to send out pubs and manuals to Marine Corps units in the field. Remember the "football" (briefcase) the military aide used to carry around behind the President during the Cold War. I helped put material in that case. Talk about classified. I used to tell folks if I told you what I did I would have to KILL YOU!!!!!

Uncle Harry,

So far, so good. I WILL be on here keeping Ross, Mary, Bonnie, Ann and the others on an even keel. Pace myself????? I can take on the world!!!!!! OUCH!!!!

Yaps,

Life is great!!!! At least the FIRST week!!!!:p

Ross,

You got that right. Them bills keep coming no matter what. But I will still pop up here and make your life more enjoyable.:p

Ann,

Richland is 60 miles North of Albany. I used to deliver car parts to Camilla when I was driving a truck. No planes around the base any more. Turner Field (where the planes were ) is now warehouses and Miller Brewing. I will be riding (or driving once I wear a hole in the floorboard:eek: ) with the wife EVERY DAY!!! :p At least until she retires.

Marguerite,

Y'all ain't a gonna get rid of me that easy. Even Ross TAKING AWAY all my counts didn't discourage me!!!!:p

Thanks to all my family and,

May God Bless,

Danny

Hey Danny,

That actually sounds kinda "fun". I love putting information together in packets for things.

Hmmm...but, instead of mailing them, I'd want to drive them and deliver them in person ;). He he he

Danny: Hey that's sound like a good job! Congratulations on a job so easily gotten; that's rare no matter what age! I do agree with the unconfessed discrimination of 50 somethings, etc., by employers. Experience and wisdom sometimes is a better trait sheer youth (not that youth is bad). Good luck with the job and hope that you enjoy it and work there for as long as YOU want to.

Go Git 'Em!

Go Git 'Em!

Danny,

Good news! -- congrats! Hey 60 miles in Jaw-Ga is a piece of cake compared to a 25 mile commute in DC area (which I used to make).

I am in a somewhat similar situation, work-wise (is that a word? -- no). Won't go into all the gory details, but my work has been dwindling because (I strongly suspect) of the OHS and age -- though of course they never say that. I now have to consider taking SS a year early and being limited in what I can earn extra.

But I've decided to charge ahead -- have signed up for course to prepare for taking real estate licensing exam. I'm spry and get around -- think that's something I can do for a new career. Guy who showed us our new home last August was 79 -- he went into real estate at 64.

Besides, don't let the b--t--ds get you down!

So anyway thanks for passing along your good news -- it's inspirational!

Cheers,

Bob
