I am now 3 1/2 mos. post OHS. Am more uncomfortable than I have been for a couple of months. Collarbone aches, neck issues, upper left of my chest is very tender, deep breaths feel like they are pushing the top of my sternum....I felt very fortunate to have minimal pain post-surgery....but I don't understand all these aches now. Got a massage last week....helped some, but muscles around shoulder and neck are very tender. Rehab is going fine....walked on my treadmill for 30 min. this a.m. at 3 mph....pushed it up to 3.6 mph and 6% grade for a short time....no problem....in fact my HR maxed at 115. Don't know why all these aches are starting up now! Anyone else experience this?

I have similar aches and pains. I have finished my cardiac rehab and am now getting fairly fit, for 17 weeks post surgery, I am told to expect these pains for up to a year. I also have found that statins really make me achey and have now got mine down to 10mg per day of Atorvasatin. I had a cholesterol check 3 weeks ago which was fine.

Heck I was aching still at 6 months, so it's certainly within the realm of possiblity. Best thing is to have someone massage your neck and shoulders. People have tried meds, but found the most relief with massage.

I don't know if what you are describing could be similar but I developed inflammation of the cartilage (sp?) where my ribs atttached to my sternum. It was extremely painful for me and got worse a few more months post-op. I had (and still have) some collarbone issues too. My right side is worse. The rib inflammation is called costochondritis. I didn't take any meds for it but wonder if maybe I should have. I still have a few twinges from it. You might research costochondritis here and on the web. I don't know which doctor would treat you for it, if it's what you may have developed. Hope you feel better. Keep us posted.

The shoulder, chest, neck, arm and leg pains are beginning to diminish. I healed quickly following surgery however the pain has lingered until I began cardio rehab. I just wasn't prepared for the intensity of the pain and general uncomfortableness. My cariologist and surgeon have not addressed the situation. They are both #1 ranked at the Clv Clinic. Their collective wisdom is to say I should expect this situation for at least 1 year post surgery.

I had a flare up of pain several months out, too. Mostly in the sternum area. The drugs they give us are so powerful. I think it takes some of them a few months to wear off (then leaving us suddenly feeling what pain or relief they were covering for so long). And don't forget that you were physically splayed out on that operating table -- they were leaning on you, etc. etc.. Recovery is a journey. You will have ins and outs for months.

That said, never ever hesitate to call the PA (physician's assistant) at your surgeon's office and check in with your symptoms. They will have the best answers for you.

Hang in there! Keep us updated.
