My husband will be coming home soon after his second hospitalization. He had a St Jude valve with root graft and LAD bypass on 5/12/06. He went home on5/17/06.Then he developed A fib, a pericardial effusion and tamponade. He was transferred back to RIH from our community hospital on5/27/06. On 5/28 1500 cc was drained from his pericardium and 1200cc from his pleural cavity.Needless to say we are thankful to the Drs Singh and Feng and the staff at Rhode Island Hospital for saving his life twice. He also has Anti phospholipid syndrome and has been on coumadin for 4 years. We are working with the RIH staff to start home INR testing. If we have a choice what machine and why? Thanks,Deb and John

At this time, there are only two choices. Protime by ITC or INRatio by Hemosense. Coaguchek may come out in the future with the XS, but it' not available in america right now.

Either unit is fine. I prefer the INRatio because it's very small, easy to use, and requires very little blood for a sample. You can see both units at the link below:

I have the INRatio and love it. I have never used another so I cannot compare. However, when reading the posts from others, the INRatio seems to be easier to use, travels like a charm and requires less blood. I also think the supplies are slightly less expensive although I could be wrong about that one.
