Hello from Germany,
I had an Aortic Heart Valve (Perimount Magma / model: 3000) implanted on the 2nd of March, 2005.
The operation was done in an outstanding manner at the Albertinen Hospital in Hamburg.
I am in an excellent condition and in the meantime I have started long-distance running again, which I like very much. I practise 10 km every day including a warm-up phase of 15 minutes on the ergometer. My maximum pulse is about 155 bpm while running and approx. 56 bpm at rest.

A small data-connection

Age : 67 years
Weight : 68 kg
Height : 178 cm
Blood pressure : 108 / 70
Cholesterol total : 148 mg / dl
Cholesterol HDL : 61 mg / dl
Cholesterol LDL : 71 mg / dl

I have three questions that are important to me :
1. With which heart rate (pulse) may the Perimount Magma be loaded at most ?
2. Does a too high pulse reduce the life of the Perimount Magma ?
3. What is your experience with ?Magma? regarding sports about 6 months after operation ?

I would highly appreciate your brief comment. I would like to participate again in a 10 km competition on the 25th of September !

Kind regards from Germany and many thanks in advance.

Günther

Sorry, I can't answer your questions regarding the pulse rate, but I can tell you that 6 months post-op with the magna valve, Dick was back to all his activities- golf, tennis, bike riding (10-15 miles), swimming, and climbing ladders etc. for house chores. He actually started tennis, golf, biking and swimming 3 months post-op, playing doubles daily, swimming daily and taking long bike rides at least once a week.

Hi Gunther,

Glad to hear about your successful surgery. It sounds like your recovery is progressing very well.

I am not familiar with the Perimount Magma valve, so I cannot offer any comments about it. Maybe some others here are familiar with it.

Good luck with your training and in your upcoming 10K race.

Mark

Welcome Günther

I don't know if any of us will be able to answer your questions - or if the answers are definitively known by anyone.

I have to say, though, that you are an impressive machine! Your blood pressure, lipids, weight/height ratio are exemplary, and your ability to run 10KM evryday is very impressive.

It sounds like you have recovered well - congratulations!

I too got a Magna 3000. I am 10 mo. out and have been doing everything I was doing before surgery. I have never been told outright that high heart rate will wear out the valve, but I got that impression from my Cardio. The surgeon put me on Toprol and said not to go much over 125 bpm and I'm only 57. I was having a hard time keeping pulse down so he raised my dose to 50 mg. now I have to work pretty hard to get to 125-128. I water ski competitively and was worried at first, but skied hard all summer and no adverse affects. Had my echo last month and he just said " see you in a yr." so the valve must have worked ok.
