when to call dr

Hi Everyone, yesterday I had a bloody nose.tried many things to stop it,however finally after 1 full hr it stoped. when does one call the dr./go to ER .I decided to skip a dose of my coumadin today i I will have my INR checked tomorrow.I also was experienceing headaches before my nose bleed after the nose bleed it became much less are they related .thank you chris

Chris, don't go skipping doses of your coumadin unless you know what your current INR is. Sometimes a nosebleed is hard to stop even when someone is not on coumadin. I think you need to let whoever manages your coumadin know what is happening. I don't know if the headache is related to the nosebleed or not. I'm glad you are checking your INR tomorrow but remember that the dose you skip today won't be reflected in the result you get. It takes about four days to see the effect of a dose change. Joe has had nosebleeds when his INR is low and when it is regular and when it is high. So Betty is right. Don't skip a dose assuming that it is high.

Joe has a "bleeder" in his nose that can bleed at the drop of a hat. If you cannot stop your nosebleed in 20 minutes or so and it is bleeding heavily, maybe you should have gone to the ER even though is a royal pain in the rear. They can do things there that you cannot do at home.

Better to be safe than sorry.

My husband has been through this a few times and here is a bit of advice for anyone with this problem, given by my former cardioilogist (when it is not a serious problem, give it a try):

It?s a good diea to squeeze a piece of cotton wool with peroxide (volume 10) into each nostril a few times and lay your head back until the effect has gone.
