Chris's surgical consult is scheduled on Wed. June 24 with Dr. Gates at CHOC. What should we expect? I would like to prepare him so that he will less nervous meeting the man who cut him open. I know he'll tell us his plan for the surgery and answer our questions. Will we be able to ask questions withou Chris in the room? Will there be a physical exam? Can I recod the meeting so that I don't have to write it all down? I know all dr.sbarebdifferent but any insight would be appreciated.

If you have had a recent exam by his cardio, I would expect the surgeon wouldn't do much but maybe listen to his heart. If you feel more comfortable asking questions without him in the room, tell the nurse as you are going back and ask if she can come and get your son for a few minutes while you do this. As for recording the conversation, that is a great idea. Just ask, I would be surprised if he said no. I read a study once that had the recall rates of what Dr.'s told patients and it was unbelieveably low, so I think most Dr.'s would welcome it just for that reason.

I know this is an extremely anxious time for you, but it will be over before you know it and he will be on his way to getting well.

I can't really answer your question, but I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. What a stressful thing to have to go through. I'd rather go through it 100 times myself than to be in your shoes. Take good care and best of luck to Chris!

Hey, Cheryl!

Hey, Cheryl!

I'm with Kim. It probably depends on when Chris's last full checkup was as to what the surgeon will dictate. Is this a pre-op appointment or strictly a consult? If it is a consult and he has recent data on Chris (echo, cath, etc.) then he probably will not have you go through all of that. As far as taping the consult, with the exception of Katie's first surgery, we always do. I did e-mail Dr. Bove and gain his approval in advance. He graciously agreed (just like I knew he would.) I can't imagine any surgeon worth his salt who wouldn't allow you to tape the consult, but it is always good to check. As far as asking questions without Chris, ask the nurse or receptionist beforehand if there is a place for Chris to go or maybe a child life rep could help out here. If Chris is like most kids, he will probably be bored about halfway through your questions and quit listening anyway. ;) Good luck and keep us posted. Hugs. Janet

Cheryl,
I would call and see if they even need him to be there. If they do, I would let them examine him and then have him leave so you can talk to the surgeon. Every kid is different and you will know best how much information Chris wants or needs. If it will stress him out to see the surgeon, then why do it. On the other hand, some kids want to know. As I said, you know best and don't feel concerned about telling the docs what you think Chris needs.

My thoughs are with you. I know how stressful this is.
