What is ablation

I have seen this word a few times. Can someone fill me in on what it is?

Hey Steve,
Cardiac ablation is a medical procedure used to help Atrial Fibrillation. In an ablation procedure, the electro physiologist first does something called mapping, which means he or she pinpoints the precise area in the heart at which the abnormal signals start. The electro physiologist then eliminates the small area of tissue that is causing the arrhythmia. I hope this helps you out.
