I know this is a weird question but here goes,I've been treated for sinus infections and my glands under ear lobe (side of neck) always swell, especially the right side. I thought that was why I was so tired, I know now it is the valve issue. Anyways I just finished amoxicillian 2 days ago and the gland on the right side has started swelling again. Has anyone else had anything like this and does it have anything to do with severe mitral valve leak? I'm wondering should I just take antibiotic all the time until I see the surgeon?

I have glands that are always enlarged. I'm not sure if it's because of the multiple battles with strep throat throughout my lifetime, or what. For the most part I don't think about them except when I see a new physician or nurse and they note that they are swollen. Unless it's an infection, I wouldn't take an antibiotic. Overuse of antibiotics causes too many other issues.

I think you really ought to discuss this with your general physician. Is there any possibility that you could have mono? I don't want to attribute your tiredness to mono, but, of course, that is one of the main symptoms. It is also the symptom of your valve going down. But I would really insist on a lively discussion about those swollen glands. I agree that using antibiotics is not a good idea unless there is a known infection. Sometimes, of course, sinus infections are very stubborn. Only a doctor will be able to determine what is going on. Please call and talk with a nurse, at the very least.
Try not to worry. This whole situation is stressful enough. Putting yourself under the watchful eye of your physicians is a very good idea. When all of your doctors are aware of impending surgery, they get very attentive. Use them. They are medical professionals. We are not!!

I don't know if the sinus infection is caused by the valve, but I wonder if the sinus and throat infections have caused the valve getting bad? They asked me if I had high fever

I went to doctor today, wasnt too impressed with her but she did have me get a ct scan to see what is going on with sinuses and gave me antibiotic, augmentin. They have also asked me about rheumatic fever which I was never diagnosed with, i did have very high fever when I was a little baby 6-9 months old. I had bad tonsils but they were removed when I was in kindergarten... I don't think they know what caused mine. I am worried about my children I have a 19 year old girl who has had the same as me when she was little and they took out the tonsils she has had symptoms and an echo done. the doctor told her she had a small leak but it was normal??? I'm thinking she should be checked about it now to make sure it doesn't get like mine (she is married and is living in New York) far from Mommy so of course I don't like that. My son is 23 and he actually had mono and was very sick when he was 9 years old. With them not knowing what caused mine I just can't help but worry about them........ I've been getting treated for the sinus infection for about 2 years now, I seem to keep one, who knows!! Hopefully the Ct scan will show something. Just wanted to share!!!! Thanks for listening!!!

Glad they are doing something other than just giving you drugs. RF at 6-9 months would be very uncommon. Generally, no one gets strep before they are 2 and RF usually doesn't appear until age 4 or 5. However, strange things do happen. It could have been another infection that caused the damage though.
16 years ago when they found my brother's bum aortic valve, they assumed he had RF based on my history. When they got in to do the surgery, they discovered the BAV that he'd had since birth. I guess echos weren't advanced enough to catch it then.

Glands swelling under the ear lobe itself usually relate to infection in the ear lobe ie from ear piercing or earings etc.Sometimes from the ear cartilage or parotid (salivary)gland.Glands that swell under the angle of the jaw are related to throat infection.Sinus infection rarely gives rise to swollen glands.It is very unlikely to have anything to do with heart valves.If there are swollen glands in other areas as well ie armpit, groins that could mean something else entirely.Best check with your doctor and it's not a good idea to take antibiotics long term unless instructed to do so.I hope that helps.

I had one devil of a time with that antibiotic. It really bothered my stomach very, very much. The first 4-5 days were Ok, but the longer I took it the worse it became.

I suspect that there are many folks who have no trouble whatever with this antibiotic. But, for those few of us who do, it is not fun to deal with.

When I take any antibiotic, I take acidophilus pills, which you can get in any drugstore. The problem with antibiotics, is that while killing the "bad bacteria", they also kill off the good stuff. That will cause a nasty case of diarrhea. The acidophilus will replace the "good bacteria".
If you don't like pills, you can take yoghurt, but only those with active cultures. I don't think that the yoghurt will work as well as the pills though.
