I lost 30 pounds after my first OHS in May, 2005. I had that horrid infection MSRA (something like that) and was on 8 weeks of vancomycin. I also had C Diff. Not only was the thought of food disgusting, my digestive system was destroyed. I'm going to get a colonoscopy soon to see if there is anything wrong beyond IBS.
Anyway...I had to have another surgery this past January and had none of those problems, but I have not gained any weight back. My appetite is good, in fact I eat about 5 times a day. My question is has anyone experienced this and did you gain any of the weight backk? I read that when a middle aged woman loses a lot of weight they never gain it back.
Since I'm underweight right now, I wouldn't mind gaining 5-10 pounds back, but no more.
Can anyone give me any insight?
Thanks everyone.
Barbara:)

I would like to think that I won't regain my lost weight, but I doubt whether that is the case. My total weight loss was 56 pounds, this was mostly due to endocarditis. My calf muscles went, my legs were like matchsticks, and my bottom disappeared! Since my OHS I have regained about 21 pounds, mostly muscle, the jeans I bought soon after my OHS still fit so I don' think I have gained too many inches. I am 58.

Could it be that you are eating a healthier diet? Perhaps cutting back on some fatty foods? Are you burning off calories in additional exercise?

I lost 14 lbs. after my surgery at age 61.. Now, 4 years this 25th..:) I have gained that back and 20 more.   ...I have tried to diet..but messes up my INR (Great excuse?:p )..I walk a lot..everyday..and do not like sweets?Have cut out most bread...but, have to eat a normal meal to keep my INR in Range....I do agree about the middle age thing...My M/I/l and my Mama were both heavy women... Both lost much weight in their 70's..and on until they passed..  But, I am happy that I am never sick..so, will live with this extra weight.I do have an ABQuest ordered now for a month. On backlog..they must be very popular....Hoping it will help me lose some weight around my middle.:D Bonnie

Ilost 50 lbs. from January 06 till Feb 06. I am weak and most of what I lost was muscle, there was some fat too. I could not eat, food was disgusting and I just now started eating. It is tough but I need to get my weight back.I am a big guy 6'4" and I weigh 200lbs. I am 54 years old and was very active and was weighing in at 250-260. I am 7 weeks post op and will start physiacal therapy next week. I need to eat and I am drinking protein shakes like there is no tomorrow.

I don't know why it happened but I am dealing with it.

Be careful with the protien shakes, most of them have lots of vitamin K and no listing on the label. Had the hardest time getting my INR high enough to be in range with them. After the first few weeks off them, had hard time getting the INR back down.

Hey - I will be more than happy to give you 5 or 10 of my pounds.;) :D ;)
Protein shakes can be great since, I believe, you are not on coumadin (correct?). Also, milk shakes will help, if the cholesterol is not an issue for you. Otherwise, your doctor might be able to make some suggestions.

Seems like everyone else lost weight. I kind of expected to, but I weighed almost 20 pounds more the day after surgery than I did the morning of surgery. It was all fluids of course, but it still took two weeks to get it off. I've lost about 10 additional pounds since then, but it's because I am walking daily and eating healthier.
