It's fluid. When you're in the hospital, they pump you full of sodium solution through any IVs they have attached to you, it's used as a vehicle to carry other meds into your body, plus most hospital food (surprisingly) has lots of sodium. And lying around in bed without much activity, doesn't help get rid of fluid either.

If you are having any breathing problems, please call your doctor and see if they will give you a diuretic or extra diuretic if you are already on one, and watch your sodium carefully. Ditto if you are feeling nauseous.

Like they said, fluid. I don't exactly know why I also had the trouble--my blood pressure was low after surgery and my kidneys weren't working, but I don't know which problem caused which problem--but I bloated hugely the first few days following the surgery and they didn't even get me up for a few days and I was in some kind of step-down unit with extra nursing.

I don't know how many pounds I was up when they finally weighed me because everything was in metric. However, my cardiologist put me on a reduced liquid consumption for the first few or several weeks following surgery, and I guess all that extra fluid I was holding was the reason for that instruction.

So my suggestion would be for you to just call your doctor and tell him the numbers and ask him if he recommends anything. And ditto, especially call your doctor right away if you have those other symptoms Nancy mentioned.

Glad you're doing so well otherwise. Take care and post again.

From day 1 post-op to day 2 post-op, I gained about 10 pounds. They put me on IV Lasix and kept the urine catheter in an extra day so I didn't have to get up and pee every two seconds, and I lost the fluid weight. From then on, I had no problem.

BTW, one doctor told me that it can take about 7 days for a normal person to shed fluid from a too salty meal. So keep that in mind. I don't know what the numbers would be for a person who has any amount of CHF, though, it might be more difficult or impossible in that case to lose it w/o diuretics.

I gained 10 pounds in a few days after surgery. The swelling in my arms and legs had increased and I had more trouble breathing, If happens to you, you should see a doctor ASAP!
The fluid build-up caused me to go into A-fib and congestive heart failure. I went back into the hospital for nine more days. This would not have happened if a couple of nurses and a resident doctor would have listened to my wife :(

Yep, it's fluid, as all the others have indicated. Heck of a note, isn't it? But it should come off. I would definitely call your doctor's office and give them the numbers and see if they need to do the Lasik thing.

Best wishes for a smooth recovery from here on.

I went into surgery weighing 168# I came out weighing 190#
2 months later I weighed 153#. I am now back to about 170# lol

The way my hands and feet looked after surgery I could have auditioned for a part as the Pillsbury Doughboy without using any make up.

talk about a rollercoaster!

Post op I also retained fluid and bloated from my knees down to my toes.....I looked very strange, especially since my arms, hands, etc. were all thin.
I took Lasix, then my potassium crashed, but at least the bloating was gone.
This weight issue is a very good reason to leave hospital in sweatpants...:)

I gained 25 lbs in the 7 days in the hospital and it was NOT because I ate the food! Same as the rest here, all fluid. Maybe that should be on the list of things to bring to the hospital - LOOSE clothes to wear home :)

Peace,
Ruth

Weight Loss For Me

I stayed about the same during most of my stay, but once home, I have noticed I am down a pant size. Great, as I was a little too heavy before, but am careful about getting too many new clothes as I may gain it back.

All in all, I've lost 15 pounds since the surgery  The docs think it's Great and I feel better than I have in a long time.

Yeap me too up 14lbs and boy did I look it!!

I didn't know until they put me on a scale, I couldn't believe it.
I was sent home with Lasix to..for 5 days.
That worked I dropped about 2 lbs a day

Wow...wish I'd had that problem

Wow...wish I'd had that problem

I was in the hospital for 5 days and LOST 10 pounds...I am now 2 months out and have gained most of it back...take ensure with protein every day plus my wife feeds me well.

I was 146 when I went in so I really couldn't afford to lose what I did.

Interesting how some people lost weight and others gained. I lost 17 lbs in post-op despite experiencing fluid build-up sufficient to get drained surgically (pericardial tamponade). Now a year and a half post-op, I've gained back 10 lbs normally (not fluid) but am still 7 lbs shy of my pre-op weight of 152 lbs. It's been pretty steady at 145 lbs for about 6 months now.
