Hi, im back again just trying to prepare myself. My son has nose bleeds quite often. His last nose bleed was a nightmare and we ened up phoning the hospital because it seemed to go on for ever, it was coming out of his mouth, making it difficult for him to breath.it stopped on the way to hospital. Anyway my question is, will being on warfarin, make the nose bleeds last longer and after how long does it become a emergancy. Thanks Paula x

I tell people that if they fill three to five tissues with blood then they need to start making preparations to go to the hospital. I seldom recommend an ambulance because it rarely is an emergency. It seems that most nosebleeds stop on the way to the hospital. I also say to wait about 15 minutes before heading home after it stops. You want to make sure that it has really stopped.

Nosebleeds usually occur from the same nostril. Quite often there is one vein that can be cauterized and that will stop the repeat bleeds.

A funny thing about nosebleeds -
Jim used to get them all the time, and had a vein cauterised a couple of times. They were heavy and would go on for ages.
Since his AVR, they have (touch wood!) stopped. He had a couple of light ones in the couple of weeks after he was home, but nothing like pre-op (and pre-warfarin).
There was a theory someone posted here a while back that there was a link between aortic stenosis and nosebleeds. We figured it could have been due to Jim's blood pressure being VERY high - so the weakened vein in his nose would bleed at the slightest thing. Now his BP is normal it isn't a problem.
Gemma.
