I have read some posts about rubbing ointment on your scar to help witht the tightness and overall fast healing of the scar tissue. When is it time to start doing this and besides Vitaman E and Aloe what does everybody recommend? Thanks

I have not had my OHS yet but was in a bad wreck in 1979 and had over one hundred stitches plus plastic surgury. My plastic sugeon told me to use coco butter after the stitches were out. Was supose to reduce scaring and aid in healing. My better half swears by vitamin E. She's always right.;)

Im having surgery on Wed. and a friend of mine that is a naturopathic doctor suggested a healing salve with Calendula Oil in it. She suggested, Herbal Ed's Healing Salve by Herb Pharm but I couldn't find it so I purchased Kuumba Made Herbal Healing Salve which I found at whole foods. Hope this helps, like I said, I will be giving it a shot later next week.

Randy,

I've always heard that rubbing vit E on a scar will help it heal better. At my last visit with my surgeon, I asked him if I treat my new scar with anything special and specifically asked about vit E. he said I could put just about anything on it that I want but it was his opinion (and I trust his opinion) that none of these creams -- vit E, mederma, etc, -- really do any good. He said they wouldn't hurt me so if I wanted to try that was fine but that the only difference they would make would probably be in my dry cleaning bill and not my actually healing :)

To each his own though!

mederma

mederma

My doctor told me as soon as my scar had healed completely (no more scabs and stuff) to try mederma if I wanted to. My scar was barely noticeable after the first surgery...so I figured this one would fade too. She just mentioned it before I left the hospital to try and let her know how it did. I did try the scar thing where you put the strips on the scar...I hated that...it totally broke my skin out and was like putting tape on the thing. I did that for like a week and then threw the whole box away. That's the only thing I have ever tried for an actual scar...and like I said...my scar was barely noticeable after about a year anyway. I don't remember it ever being tight either. I did put Vitamin E on my belly when I was expanding when I was pregnant both times and I didn't get stretch marks at all. I don't know if it works on an existing scar though. It couldn't hurt though.

I am pretty sure I am going to try the mederma once I have no scabs and no glue left on this one.

I had staples after my last OHS and, as soon as they were out, I started putting Vit. E oil on the scar. I used the capsules and just cut them and sqeezed the oil on and rubbed it in very gently. I had clothing that opened down the front so I made sure the scar was not covered as Vit. E oil can stain.

The oil in the capsules is more sanitary than bottles of oil (and often much cheaper in the large economy size) because the oil is not exposed to the air until you cut the capsule. I always feel it is better because it is the "stuff" that goes into you mouth so I think it is purer. Just my opinion of course.

I am convinced the oil made a difference in the appearance of my scar. Considering the fact that the area has been opened four times (3 OHS & an infection due to reaction to sutures), my scar is very light and flat.

Scar therapy

I tried so many things but finally found the Silicone patches. I use the ones by Neosporin (no antibiotic in them) Each patch lasts 4 days. You take it off once day and wash it and must wear it for at least 12 hours. The scar where the trach was really hurt and pulled. As long as I have the patch on, I am fine. It really has made a difference in the appearance.
My derm doc also recommended Mederma but I haven't gotten it yet.
I did also try the Vit E in the capsules and will resume that after the 90 days with the patches.
Don't put anything on them until they are closed.

little caplets that are specific for skin 9not to be consumed). I don't know if its making any difference yet, but I waited until everything was well closed. I will try the scar stuff later when I am less red...I don't want to do anything to irritate the incision sites.
