I'll add a few notes to this: Performance bars are the standard powerbar. They have some other versions, harvest, pria, that DO contain Vit K. Just read the labels. Will

William,
Thanks for sharing the info. I eat a lot of those things when I work out and on long bike rides. Never crossed my mind that they might have Vitamin K in them...
Mark

PS- Oatmeal Raisin is my favorite!

Then again, some of us, especially me, use powerbars as an example towards nutritional bars in general. Glad you pointed this out. Now I'll just keep it to nutritional bars in general.

I guess the best policy is to check the boxes, though not always is it disclosed. Perhaps look at the content of the bars and see if it contains anything that may have Vit K in it?

confused...

confused...

Dumb question: Vit K lowers our INR???

My gram was trying to tell me that if i had too much Vit K or green leafy veggies that my INR would RISE.(my grandfather use to take coumadin).... and i THOUGHT that it meant that they would LOWER...

Can someone straighten me out... i know i could call my Dr. But i was hoping this place could help me out faster!

Still new to this coumadin stuff!

Vit K counteracts or lowers your INR. It is given orally for Coumadin overdosing at the hospital or a combo of Vit K and plasma.

Just to remind people to label read all nutrition bars carefully, for some do have vitiamin k in them. Please be careful, look up info with the company for truthfull response. Thanks for sharing on the power bars.

Read labels! I tanked my INR by eating a protein bar a day that had 30% RDA of K, without realizing it. In fact, that's how I found VR. I was searching for answers.

.....And instead, you got me of all the dumb luck! :D

I have seen one woman who caused a stroke by eating a case of Luna Bars over a few days.

Another man's wife was giving him supplements that contained 2 mg of vitamin K every day. This was enough to lower his INR to 1.0 and keep it below 2.0 for over a month after he stopped the supplements. Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin, so its effect on lowering the INR p[ersists for a long time.

Yea, Luna bars have a lot of Vit K. It's been awhile since I seen one, but I think the label said 100% RDA Vit K per bar. Will

Very interesting thread. I went and looked at the Cliff Bars I eat when hiking (made by same company as Luna bars). It has 25% of the daily recommended vitamin K in it. I have now found another bar that tastes ok with no vitamin K. These bars must taste ok for me to eat them. Many quite frankly taste awful.

Question-Eating one bar in a day in which it has 25% of recommended daily allowance of Vitamin K in it, how big a risk is it if you are otherwise under control? Esecially if it is only eaten periodically, like just a few times a year?

Mile high

Could be dangerous doing it a few times per year because consistency is what is needed for warfarin management.

The person who caused a stroke only ate a bunch of them once.

Al:
When the label lists vitamin K, does that mean vitamin K itself has been added (like when you take vitamin K tabs), or that it contains ingredients that have vitamin K in them?

I think it's the former, but I'm not a nutritional expert or pharmacist. ;)

I'm not sure which it is either. Maybe somebody who works in the nutrition field will have the answer. I know that if it is added, you have to note it.

We know that V8 has vitamin K but they do not have to state it on the label. So that confuses the issue.

... I had no idea that V8 has Vit K until it was posted in this forum.
As a matter of fact 1 cup of V8 has about 12.8 mcg of Vit K, not to mention 590 mg sodium in the regular V8! Personally I have a hard time drinking the low-sodium V8... keep wanting to add salt to it

Nah, just throw some Vodka in it. :D
