Is it OK to take Emergen-C while on coumadin? It has no vit K, lots of C, some B's & "other stuff"...

I don't think Vit C causes problems; nor the "B's" - what kind of "other stuff?" The problem arises from various herbs and natural stuff - ginseng, etc. etc.

I don't know what "emergency" in this context is. With regard to vitamin C, it can have an effect on INR but can be taken safely if it is taken with the same rigor that Coumadin is taken. My husband takes his vitamin C each and every day, just as he takes his anticoagulant.

The problem with taking vitamins that affect anticoagulation is lack of consistency. People know that Coumadin is necessary daily but maynot accord vitamins the same awareness. Dosage is also important. What is the strength of the Vitamin C that you are considering?

Regards,
Blanche

P.S. Hubby's Doc recommended B Vitamins 16 years ago. No problems there.

I think she is refering to "Emergen-C" by Alacer. I swear by the stuff. In fact, just staved off yet ANOTHER cold by taking it. Haven't had a cold in four years. . .

This link has a list of the ingredients.

I think you're correct Melissa.. Emer-gen C or something like that.. yep, sware by the stuff myself too.. I just adjust my dose if i'm taking more then a couple days in a row.. I used to take it as a pick me up.. but I have to watch the INR.. so now I take when the crud is going around and/or I feel i'm coming down with it.

Yep - that is the stuff. Before all this began I was faithful at taking it.

Will it make the INR go up or down?

Patty:
I have read a number of things that warn that Vitamin C has a potential interaction with Coumadin when taken at high doses....but, I don't know what they mean by high doses. The packets that you mention have 1,000mg, (1111% MDR) and the directions are to use 2 packets. Seems like a great deal to me. Vitamin C is water soluble, so what you don't use should be excreted. In our house, we err on the side of caution. Albert would not take such large doses. I have never heard of the other vitamins and minerals in this supplement having interactions with Coumadin.

I am leaving a link here that might speak to your concerns. Also, I am not an expert in this area by any means. I was hoping that Christina or Arizona Pam might see your post and reply. They are both a wealth of information on supplements.

Kind regards,
Blanche, with special thanks to MelissaM for the info and link

I used to use one packet a day. Being around kiddos at school, it really helped ward of the creeping crud. I guess I'll wait and not take it until I talk with someone about it...

I think that the vitamin C - warfarin interaction is more theoretical than real.
