Hi
We are finally going to visit with Dr. Isom at NYP tomorrow. I have so many questions to ask him, I can practically fill a book. My husband is 65 and I think we are going to ask for a tissue valve. He needs an AVR. I'm wondering how he will recuperate and get on with his life. It sounds like a long haul. We were hoping to go on a vacation this summer. Might have to put that on hold too. Sorry, my mind is racing and I'm trying to di too many things at one time. Good luck to you all.

If it is just a "regular" AVR your husband needs, he should be fine for vacation in three months after surgery at most (probably two). Unless, of course, your vacation is running the bulls in Pampilona...

Best wishes,

Had same surgery

Had same surgery

Hi,
I had the same surgery in 2000 and had a tissue Valve. I was 58 and it took me about 6 weeks before I could get around pretty good. I had a lot of afib problems after the surgery and it slowed my recovery. He should do fine.

How was the meeting with Dr. Isom today? Let us know how you guys made out. About vacation, in my experience I was 3 months post-op when I felt comfortable enough and secure enough to go about "life as normal". Make sure he lays off the heavy luggage lifting!

Dick and I traveled from CT to our condo in FL, 7 weeks after his AVR and then went to Aruba for 9 days, 3 weeks later. He did fine- walked the entire Island of Aruba in extreme heat. I carried the luggage. :)

I took vacations 2 months post-op from all 3 of my OHS - kinda like a prize for getting through them. 1 to Cape Cod, 1 to St. Thomas and 1 to Hawaii. I had no problems with any of them. Hired folks to carry heavy stuff, avoided rock climbing and bungee jumping but hiked, rode motor bikes and horses, even climbed up to the top of a lighthouse.
Of course, every one is different but I should think if your husband has surgery within the next couple of months, a vacation this summer will not be an issue.
Take care and keep us posted.

porcine versus bovine?

porcine versus bovine?

Thanks for all your replies. It is reassuring to know that we will be able to do something "fun" several months down the road. We saw Dr. Isom yesterday, He feels that Dirck is a good candidate for tissue replacement and we have tentatively scheduled March 1 for surgery. The entire office staff, cardiologist and Dr Isom were extremely thorough and pleasant...spending almost two hours with us. Now... what about the benefits of porcine versus bovine??
Thanks to all,
Cary
