Hi Leroy. Just keeping your post fresh. I am an Ornish vegetarian (almost vegan) but have no experience with coumadin. I would guess that the oft repeated mantra of "dose the diet, don't diet the dose" would apply. In other words, be consistent about what you eat and take the dose that keeps you in range. Visit Allodwick's website, it may address coumadin and the vegetarian.

Although I do not consider myself a vegetarian, I eat very little meat or eggs because I am so picky about where these items originate. As all the stories of mad cow disease and avian flu grow, I find myself eating a lot of tofu and legumes and vegies in general.

My INR has not changed with my diet. I have been on pretty much the same dosage for 25 years. There have been a few alterations but I can contribute those to antibiotics, exercise changes, etc. not to diet.

Leroy - I've been vegetarian for over 20 years. Can't say that I have a particularly healthy diet however... too much fondness for beer, wine and cheese:eek:. Obviously I do eat plenty of vegetables as well - no obvious effects on my INR as my diet is fairly constant. I know all about Dean Ornish's diet and agree with the benefits, even have a couple of his books, just lack the willpower to follow his advice:(.
Not sure what you mean by "a history of herbs" though...

Hi Leroy, I am also a vegetarian (about 18 years) and on coumadin for 6 years. Initially it was a bit of a challenge, but if you are consistent with your vit. k foods (usually greens) it is OK.

I eat a lot of tofu, grains, beans etc. and also a lot of junk!!!!

Good luck,

thanks to everyone

[/FONTwell well You'll have to pardon my skills . I studied herbs for years I would pick my own st. johns wort which also has an anti vireal property. now the coumadin booklet says it doesn't mix with coumadin they just say don't take it . IS THERE another drug that is kinder to we herb users.?]

st.john and coumadin

does anyone know what to do with 25years of studing herbs, that the coumdin people say is off limits?

I was an expert witness in a case where a woman went blind in one eye from taking St. John's Wort on an "as needed basis". Since she did not take it every day, the INR went up and down wildly. One of the ups caused her to hemorrhage into her eye. This was another one of those cases where doctors become too compartmentalized. Her cardiologist was monitoring her INR and when the cardiologist's nurse called to tell the patient that her INR was too high she told the nurse that she was having a hemorrhage in her eye. The nurse made a note in her chart and told her to reduce her warfarin dose. However, it was three months before the nurse brought it to the cardiologist's attention. By then she had lost the sight. Technically it was the nurse who was at fault, but the doctor sets the tone for what happens in the office. How, you might ask, was the hemorrhage diagnosed without another doctor being involved. It wasn't exactly clear but my suspicion was that her husband who was a retired and quite elderly doctor diagnosed it but for some reason neither of them followed up beyond telling the cardiologist's nurse. He wanted to sue the lab for the high INR!!!

Picking St. John's wort is OK. Swallowing it is not whe you are on warfarin.
