I have read of several folks saying their opening was to small for a specific valve. I was under the impression that they remove the old valve. Is this a matter of the size of the heart and the size of the original valve?

We're all built differently, and sometimes heart damage changes things, too. For instance my St Jude's mitral valve is 31 mm, which is HUGE (I think they only go up to 32mm), considering I'm a small framed female. But, given that my left atrium was stretched 40% larger than normal presurgery, it makes sense the valve area was larger, also.

My aortic is 18mm and my mitral is 27mm.

I just noticed on the back of my cards the following information...

This device is MRI compatible
Antibiotic treatment is recommended before dental or invasive medical procedures
Patient must follow physician's anticoagulation prescription.

John think i'm a mismatch:p in size and make
size 21 aortic valve (still in) 17 years ago (carbomedic)
size 29 st jude mitral in Jan
Keeps on ticking:)so thats all good.

My Aortic Root was too small (due to genetics) and the surgeon used bovine tissue to enlarge my aortic root to fit the new valve size I needed. I was really suprised because no one really mentioned that. I haven't had any issues.

my pulmonary valve they used a bovine 29 mm valve and for the tricuspid valve they used a 30 mm annuloplasty ring.
