Does anyone who had surgery recently at CC, know what the policy is on the use of PCs by pts. during their stay for OHS? Thanks

From my limited understanding, when your able to walk and can safely leave the floor, you may go to the library and use the computer on one of the other floors. Since a couple of VRer's have done this already, they probably got us all in trouble and spoiled it for future patients. :D

I don't know for sure RCB, I'm only telling you what I've heard in the past.

End of hall!

End of hall!

Hi!
When I had my surgery a year and a half ago there was one computer on the cardio post op floor. You were able to use it whenever you could get to it. It was really tough since everyone wanted to be on it. I didn't use it but my husband used it to catch up on bills and stuff like that. I did try to get on it once to post here, but the wait was too long. First come, first serve. I don't know if it has changed since then or not.

Take Care!

Sounds liike a good incentive to get patients up and walking about, in these modern times.

I'm sure it varies by hospital, but when my mother was in the oncology ward at a regional hospital last fall, each phone in each room had a data port, so if you had a portable computer you could use a dial-up connection (assuming you had the computer and the dial-up account). I'm not so sure about security, though -- notebook computers still have a nasty habit of going off on their own.

I was at the CC last month, and there was a PC on the Cardiac floor..G10
and it was almost always available. I understand that other floors also have PC's.

Also if any family is staying at the Suites or Guesthouse, they have PC's in the lobby.

CC also makes available a site www.thestatus.com for patients. This allows you to post about your condition, and have friends, relatives stay updated, instead of getting so many ohone calls. They can also leave messages.
You can set it up before you go, and password protect the site so strangers can't get in.

I found it to be a big help, and something to look forward to a few times a day.

Best of luck,
Al

Yes, It was nice to have the PC available. Although when I had my RP, there was not one on every floor. There was one on the floor below me and Ross, I was one of those guys who ruined it. I was never much for obeying rules. lol

As far as The Satus.com goes. My link is still there and active. Once in awhile I still go there to read the posts from friends and family. I was great for my wife or mom to bring in the printed posts each day I was in the hospital. Great site.

Laptops?

Laptops?

Thanks for all the replies. I think my question needs to be more
precise. Do you know if a pt. can bring a laptop in and then connect through the pt's phone with a local number of one's own ISP? I am already beginning to have withdraw
pains, just thinking about being off my computer for a couple of weeks :(

To go to that extreme, I'd call and ask. I wouldn't see why not, but you know how rules can be sometimes. I don't know that I'd risk my lappy at the place though, they have a way of disappearing. Maybe have someone bring it and take it back home?

Did that

Did that

I had asked the card. at my first appointment, he said call his secretary, she said call admitting- they didn't know, said to check with floor nurse....Ya-da..ya-da..ya-da....
I am glad you reminded me about losing the laptop-
I forgot about the "sticky-fingers" at hospital. If it isn't one
thing its another

I never had the desire to get on-line while in the hospital...

I was quite content to spend what time I had NOT jumping through hoops for various therapists and so forth watching TV, reading, or sketching.

I also did a lot of walking up and down the hallway where I was.

There was a computer in the step-down unit I was in and it was "on-line" because I watched a few different staffers use it to look up various things, but I never thought to ask about using it to check email or anything. Guess maybe I could have.

Chances are, unless you happen to live in the same place the hospital's located, you won't be able to use your own ISP and modem on a laptop. It would incur long distance charges and possibly other problems.

If there are terminals available for patients, that's probably the best route to take.

Don't plan on sitting at the computer very long though. In recovery at least, you're BEST ticket out of the hospital is walking as much as you can. That really does have a great effect on how fast your recovery is.

Helped my state of mind too, was going batty sitting on bed all day long. =)
