My schedule got all discombodulated today.

First, my Dentist's office called and asked if I could come in this morning to fit my permanent crown instead of my scheduled afternoon appointment. I had 'planned' on taking a pre-med antibiotic even though it is not generally recommended for simply placing the final crown. I forgot.
Then I had lunch and came home...and took a nap, without taking the anti-biotic.

This evening, in a fit of nervousness, I took the usual pre-med dose of Azithromycin (500 mg).

SO, should I wait before taking my evening dose of COUMADIN? If so, how long after taking an anti-biotic is it safe to take Coumadin?

Hi Al,

You should be just fine taking your dose. Even along with the Coumadin. They once had me take Lovenox, Coumadin...just after finishing IV antibiotics. Oh and I had the pre-meds too. Major overkill. Someone was CYA for sure. Was off the Coumadin for tests. Worked out just fine. I am assuming the IV variety is much more potent than the pre-meds.

I go ahead a take mine right along with the antibiotic with no problem. I wouldn't worry about it, just make sure you take it.

Thanks for the replies folks.

I ended up waiting two hours after taking the antibiotic before taking my Coumadin, just to allow them to be 'processed' separately. No problems noted.

Sorry to barge in on this thread but it seems like maybe it is the same kind of question that my brother wants me to post. So here goes

"If you have a urinary or kidney infection, for example, what impact will a
course of antibiotics have on you if you ar also on Warfarin What does the
team know about a new drug known as TAmbcor which may be a replacement for
Warfarin?"

Thanks,

Peter

Thanks all, Peri

Depending on the antibiotic, it can make the INR rise suddenly or it may do nothing at all. What is he taking? I'm going to assume it's a broad spectrum antibiotic in which he should have his INR checked in a couple days to see if he needs to adjust down until he's off the antibiotic.

Haven't heard of that replacement yet. Anyone else?

The only potential alternative I know of for Coumadin / Warfarin is the new drug EXANTA which has received a lot of press lately. It looks like it will be several years before it gets approval for Valve Patients (if ever).

Exanta has been approved in Germany for short term use following Orthopaedic Surgery (typically hip or knee replacement). The manufacturer was hoping to get approval for treatment of Atrial Fibrilation patients but it appears that the testing was not as thorough as the review board would have liked. There has been another thread on this topic in the Coumadin Forum. Search for EXANTA to read 'the rest of the story'.
