Just a quick update: Today was Jerry's app't with his card. As I posted earlier, we had thought his office's response to my mentioning his SOB to be less than desireable.

Today the doc asked him if he has any problems to which he mentioned seemingly increasing SOB. I asked about whether echos are routinely done each year (with an artificial aortic valve) and he said not necessarily unless there's some symptom. Then I asked how one would know how his arteries are doing short of waiting for chest pain. He said "with a Dobutamine Stress Echo which we're going to schedule".

Long story short, it's to be done tomorrow at 8:30 am.

Another positive note: For 2 years Jerry has had the feeling of drainage or tickling in his throat. He's seen his primary care man, an ear, nose & throat specialist all to no avail. He was in the midst of extensive dental work when it started and he thought his bite being off was the culprit. I had thought it was "nerves" since he's always been a jittery, nervous person and the dental stuff was really an ordeal. Anyway, today the card asked him if he has any coughing and he mentioned the throat thing, with coughing & clearing the throat, etc. Immediately doc said "I know what it is--it's your Altace; that's a side effect that I often see". He has changed him to another med that I can't remember right now. Starts with an "N". Then when we went to the pharmacy two different people there confirmed that side effect. Hopefully they're right and the new one will help!

I hope..........

I hope..........

the new med helps and please keep us posted on how tomorrow's appointment goes. Good luck. Sending hugs and prayers.

I've been a lurker here until I find out more about my pending valve replacement surgery but when I saw "ALTACE" I just had to reply.

I firmly believe ALTACE almost killed me. In the spring of 2004 I went to my GP at the recommendation of my Heart Doc. I have blood work done every 6 months for cholesterol monitoring. My Heart Doc said my blood sugar was up and I might need further evaluation.

My GP said the Oretic I had been taking for over 8 years could raise the blood sugar so he changed me to ALTACE. About 3 or 4 weeks after starting the ALTACE I got out of my delivery truck and was only able to take 5 or 6 steps before stopping due to Shortness of Breath. I also felt a lowering of my energy level. In addition, my next visit to the GP revealed my previously regulated blood pressure had risen. My bottom number was 115 plus. He recommended I start monitoring my blood pressure at home again and see him in 6 weeks. I could not get the bottom number below 100. After six weeks, my GP increased the dosage of ALTACE. I started feeling worse. One day while at work, I experienced SOB and had dry heaves. I went to the ER. They kept me most of the day trying to get my BP down. When I outlined my history since spring, the Doc asked if I had changed meds since then. As the GP had started and stopped several meds (BUT NOT THE ALTACE) I could not remember. That night I looked over my meds and ALTACE stood out. I went on the web and one of the adverse symptoms was SOB. I went back to the GP and his response was to increase my potassium and "see me in 6 weeks". After another week of SOB and no energy my wife INSISTED I stop taking the ALTACE and resume taking the Oretic. I did and within 48 hours felt 200 percent better. I made an immediate appointment with the GP and he said we would go back to the Oretic so long as my blood sugar stayed stable.

I continued to have some SOB every 3 or 4 weeks and suddenly started retaining fluids. I found getting my shoes on was almost impossible due to the swelling. I went to the Heart Doc and he did an echo where he discovered severe valve reguritation. As I had been under this Doc's care for over 10 years I asked him if the ALTACE might have brought this on. He didn't think it did. I still believe the ALTACE had something to do with my "sudden" severe reguritation.

Sorry this was so long, but I needed to VENT when I saw the ALTACE. Hope everything is getting better.

I list ALTACE as one of the meds to avoid.

New turn of events for Jerry

New turn of events for Jerry

Jerry went for his echo and stress echo early this morning. They did the basic echo first and wouldn't go on with the stress echo because the tech detected an ascending aortic aneurysm. They immediately did a TEE to confirm and get better measurements. It is 5.2cm. No sign of any such thing on previous echos. The stress echo will be done tomorrow in the nuclear echo dept (whatever that is) with drugs that don't tend to raise the BP. That's why they wouldn't go on with it this morning--high BP could've caused it to blow.

So now we'll see if he also has clogged arteries. If so, they'd probably go ahead and fix everything now; otherwise they usually wait till the aneurysm is 5.5.

Bummer.

Ross,

I'll piggyback on this thread for now. Guess I'll no longer be a lurker as I have my "appointment with destiny" 18 January at UAB with Dr David McGiffin. Things are starting to move fast..........

Oh, my goodness, Celia, I'm sorry to hear the latest, but how very fortunate that the aneurysm was discovered. It could have been a disaster if it wasn't known about. I sure hope they don't wait on it though. It's such a good thing that you pushed to get things looked at. It really gives me chills to think if he didn't have that test.

I'll be thinking of you both. Let us know how things go tomorrow.
