Is anyone familiar with the company Ultra Care. I have been told by United Health Care that this company is now their in-network provider for INR testing supplies.

I called the company. I spoke with 3 people before I got anyone that remotely had any idea about what type of testing supplies I was speaking of. Then I found out that my supplies for my Protime monitor was $135 for 4. Yes, that's 4. QAS charges $300 for 25. You can do the math, but that's almost 3 times as much as QAS. With UHC we now have a $100 deductible, then they pay 90%. So at the "market rate", I'd pay almost $100 more for the same amount through the in-network company. I tried to find out what the contracted rate was for United Health Care. What will Ultra Care actually bill. When I called on that question the woman on the phone said "I have no idea what it is you are talking about. I'm going to refer you to our nursing consultants." Well guess what - the "nurse" had no idea what a ProTime home monitoring system was. After explaining it to her she said "Oh, it sounds like you're a diabetic."

Oh My God!!!!!!

I finally hung up in frustration - never finding out what I would have to pay for the supplies from Ultra Care. But I was more concerned that the people I was supposedly told to order the supplies from had no idea what it was they were selling.

I may just consider ording my supplies from QAS and forget about the insurance. Everyone at QAS knows exactly what they need to know to help you out. Talking to these people at Ultra Care was like trying to explain quantum physics to a monkey.

QAS has been doing a good job for people on this site for a long time.

I just talked with someone at Ultra Care. They ARE in network. However, $135 is the rate w/out insurance. They contract w/ UHC at $72 something. Your co-pay is $7.20.

Wish QAS would get in network with UHC. UHC would be paying far less dealing with QAS out of network than dealing w/ Ultra Care in network!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Marsha. Neither UHC or Ultra Care seemed to be able to tell me what the bill would be for UHC members. You must have magic in your phone voice. :)

I guess I acted like the reporter I once was. :)
I kinda growled a little when I was told that, yes, 4 cuvettes are $135. I said, "Surely that's not what insurance is paying you." I was told, no, and asked what the contracted amount is. That's when I was given a figure of $72something. I asked what the co-pay is and was told $7.20 or a few cents over that. I told them that another company charges $48 for 4.

I checked Ultra Care's website again -- www.ultracarehm.com -- for insurance companies it deals with and saw that it accepts only United Healthcare of Illinois. No doubt would not accept UHC of Texas.

Seems UHC would want to save $$ by having you continue to get your supplies through QAS. Does anyone w/ UHC know their contracted rate vs. what QAS charges?
On the other hand, why doesn't QAS get on the ball and get in network w/ UHC?

United Health Care

I just read your threads on United Health care & Ulta Care. We had a contract with United for 2 or 3 years & it was fair to all. United decided that Ultra Care was a better fit for them in the overall picture of DME Supplies. This does sound crazy but Ultra Care buys from QAS. QAS does contact as many Insurance Companies as possible to contract with and be in Net-work. We now have a whole department that deals in Contracts. This is for everone's benifit, we secure more business and Patients pay less copay.

Marsha,
I'm beginning to find that it's the "of Illinois" part of the United Health Care that seems to be the problem. I'm always talking to them and they say "Oh, you're in Illinois."

I'm beginning to hate insurance companies more than doctors, and that's saying a lot! :(

Yep, I think whoever makes decisions at our insurance companies sits on their brains...

BTW, where in the Chicago area do you live? I have a former roommate & college classmate who lives in La Grange, I think it is.
