I am seeing my new heart surgeon tomorrow for the first time. I just got a call from a good friend who is an exceptional neuro-surgeon. She has been trying to get any information that I might find helpful. She said to inquire about the "ATV" valve as opposed to "St. Jude". She thought, on the basis of information she was able to get in the last few days that the ATV valve was considered superior by most of the people she talked to. The valve that I need replaced is the aorta valve.

I am starting to wonder if I heard her correctly on my cell phone. I have had a hard time finding anything on the net about an "ATV Valve"

I think I will stick to my decision to get a mechanical valve since I am 58 years old, otherwise in good health with a family history of my parents and uncles living into their mid-nineties. But, having recently read on this site about all the possible complications from Coumadine when other medical procedures are needed, I am a little more concerned than I was.

There are really no complications, during other medical procedures while on Coumadin, when things are done correctly. The problems come in when doctors make dumb suggestions about going off coumadin.

My opinion is you should NEVER go off of coumadin, for any reason, without some kind of bridge therapy be it heparin or lovenox. When that is done properly, other medical procedures are just a little more of a hassle than it is for a person not on coumadin.

qtson,
Your friend was very possibly referring to the ATS valve - there are a few members here who have one. If you do a search through the forums I'm sure some threads will come up (you may need to alter the date setting to show older posts).

My husband has the ATS aortic valve. His surgeon recommended it. There is lots of information on the WEB for it. Just put in ATS aortic mechanical valve and search. He has had his in for nearly 4 years and has had no problems so far. I wish you luck with your surgery. If you would like any other info you can PM me.

The other one that gets a lot of play on the forum pages is the On-X valve. My personal choice would be one of those two over the current St. Jude valve.

The St. Jude valve is an excellent valve: don't get me wrong. It has been referred to as the "gold standard" of mechanical valves for many years, and has been long regarded as the best valve available. You won't be getting a poor choice if you go with a St. Jude. But it hasn't really been updated in a long time.

The On-X and the ATS valves are very similar to the St. Jude valve, but have small refinements that are intended to make them less likely to form clots, and less damaging to red blood cells passing through. I feel that I would go for whatever advantages might be available, if I were choosing a carbon valve.

Just something ot chew on.

Best wishes,

But when you think of it, your new valve will be an All Terrain Vehicle! :D You can go anywhere with it!
