Hospital has booked a procedure for me later this month.

The hospital nurse doing the pre-surgery interview told me warfarin would be withheld 5 days prior and lovenox or heparin given the day following surgery. The way I was taught to count that means 7 days without warfarin. DUH!

I had already shown the surgeon the protocal from the Thrombosis Treatment Program/Quality Team in black and white on 8 1/2 by 11 paper extending 6 days pre-op to 5 days post-op. Maybe he only sees colour. Maybe he thought I was talking through the hole in my head and wouldn't notice the absence of lovenox injections. Bridging to him means post-op. I thought bridging was bridging.

As the song goes "when will they ever learn, when will they ever learn".

I think I'm in a state of shock and he should go back to medical school assisted by a good swift kick to -- well you know where.

Lance:
Have you asked the doctor if he will provide lifelong financial support to you if something happens during those 7 days?
Can you find another surgeon who does understand the risks to you of going without warfarin that long?

Hi Catwoman

The surgeon in Toronto practising in large hospital connected to a anticoagulation clinic can do the surgery next April.

Local surgeon can do it week after next which I thought was better.

Today's hospital interview was quite a shock.

So it looks like April is the date.

And warfarin is just a drug you swallow and have your blood tested every so often.

What a crock.

Bob:
That's why doctors go all through their careers practicing. Guess one of these days they'll get it right. Just wish it was sooner rather than later.

Thanks everyone for your excellent posts. Your support is appreciated.

Spoke with PCP this am and he is in full agreement with the lovenox bridging and the surgery will be rescheduled so he can either assist or administer the anesthesia himself. They will follow the instructions from the blood clinic in Toronto.

So the smile is right back on my face. What a relief.
