I've spent the last few days fighting trojans and worms. What really pisses me off is that I know somewhere there is a stupid, sex deprived nerd who gets his kicks out of doing this to me!!!!
Spyware Doctor was working overtime, but they all just kept coming back. At the worst, I had over 200 bad files. Then my computer would come on, but would never boot up - just kept turning itself off and trying again. I thought I had fried my computer and asked HP to send me a box to replace the motherboard. Finally, I spoke with 5 different "techs" at the company that took over the warranty work for CompUSA after they filed bankruptcy. The 1st told me that my warranty wouldn't cover it because it was caused by a virus, but I might be able to restore my computer long enough to copy my data files. He didn't know how. The 2nd one told me to check my hard drive and call back, which passed the Quick, Comprehensive and S.M.A.R.T. tests. Called back - the 3rd said he would send me a box, even though I told him I already had one coming from HP. He didn't know what else to do. The 4th one slipped and told me that she was getting her directions from hp.com. Is there anyone who does more than read the script anymore? I asked her this exact question and she referred me to her supervisor. He didn't know much more than I did, except for one key thing. As soon as the computer turns on, press F11 to get to PC Recovery. He wanted me to do the total reconfiguration of the hard drive (Step 3), but I decided to start with Step 1 and was able to recover my computer without losing my data files. Some of the bad files were still there, but Spyware Doctor was able to clean them this time. So far, so good because they haven't come back today.
