our gp has just diagnosed "trigger finger" (B painfull) in my right ring finger and has given me a 6 day course of steroids to fix it up. ( i can not remember the brand name) doc reckons it will not affect my inr, but told me to test more frequently just in case.

has anyone got experience of taking steroids with inr?

I can't help with your question, BUT a couple months ago I was DXD with trigger finger too (i had heard of it but never knew what it was) They were talking about surgery, but tried giving me a shot of steroids in the palm of my hand at the base of my finger (middle) to see if that would fix it.(which BTW hurt like Heck) and about 2 weeks later, a day after I called to say it didn't work all of a sudden my finger opened and closed. That was in May, so far so good. When I was having problems I slept with a splint on and that seemed to help a little. I hope the pills help.

OMG! I have a problem with trigger finger too! I just read about that last week in our local Ask the doctor column. I've been waiting to see if it will get any better. So far, nope. Good grief, what next? L0L

yes, the steroid i have been given is called "prednisone"; sounds a bit italian.

lynlw, our gp said he would normally inject the steroid into the hand, but he could not locate the noodule the tendon (i.e. the bit that was catching/getting stuck on the bone), so he decided on a course of pills instead.

ginger, do not worry, even though no one i know had ever heard of "trigger finger", doc instantly knew what the problem was and the number of posts here suggests it is reasonably common. i am on 3 pills per day then 1 pill per day for 3 days and then it should be fixed. personally, i would try to go for the pills instead of "the old needle in the hand trick!" (thanks max)

the prednisone is not making me feel sick or yucky, in fact i feel really good and frisky.

I have been on steroids several times since being on coumadin. Yes, it usually raises my INR and I generally make a slight reduction (a few mgs. over a few days) to counter it. I think you would find it affects blood glucose levels more than INR so diabetics need to be even more alert than most other users. I do find though that heavy doses of steroids cause me to generally feel bloated and on edge.

I hope it helps your trigger finger. I've got Dupuytren's disease in my hands which is similar condition where fibrous bands form over the tendons. My dad had problems with a trigger thumb and I think he eventually had it surgically released with good results.

Yes the prednisone makes some people feel energetic, and have a sense of well being. Others feel extremely nervous and have insomnia, with a HIGH dose. I was in the second catagory. I still take 5mg daily, but can tolerate that dosage very well!

Good luck. Hope you are back to normal soon!

I was taking 60mg a day for my lung disease for 5 years. It destroyed my left femoral head causing a total hip replacement. That is some nasty stuff!

You think I'm mean now, you should have been around me then. ;)
