Exactly one year ago I did my first sprint triathlon on a whim with two weeks of preparation - I plodded to the finish in 2:02. This past Sunday I did the same race, and after a year of training was able to finish in 1:30.07!
My goal had been to break two hours, so naturally I was ecstatic with how I finished. I improved each of the legs significantly: My swim was at a nice steady pace (last year I went out way too fast and struggled to finish). My bike leg improved significantly, not only due to logging a lot of miles in training, but also due to using bike shoes/clipless pedals and the new Cannondale R700 that replaced my trusty 30-year-old Schwinn Continental 10-speed. The run was still my weak leg, but was accomplished at a steady pace without any walking this year. In fact, I felt so good afterwards that I know I left a lot out on the course - still a lot of room for improvement!
One of the unexpected benefits of my improved finishing position was that I ended up finishing with the leading 30-40 yr old women - lots of good looking Lycra outfits to inspire me!
