Celebrating a short course "sprint" triathlon completion - my first! :)
Swim 750 meters
Cycle 20k (12.4 miles)
Run 5k (3.1 miles)***

This particular event has been a relatively local thing for a couple of years. This year the participation tripled to over 1,000 participants  including the short "sprint" course and the "Olympic" distance.

Two friends and I were cheered on by family and neighbors. It was thoroughly enjoyable and, of course, draining. It was Mike's 6th tri and Ed's first. Mike (center) and I go to church together. Ed (left) and I live across the street from each other and did some of our training together. What a joy to do an event like this with friends!

I was pleased with my swimming and cycling, but need to continue rebuilding endurance and work on the transitions.

***An interesting distraction is that one of the course guides mistakenly directed us into an extra loop that made the run distance more like 3.5 miles instead of 3.1. Such is life.

Amazingly, I feel terrific the next day. :) Very little soreness. No joint pains. Look forward to tri-ing again. :D

Way to go! Sounds like you had a blast. When are you going to do the next one ;) .

Don't you love when the course marshalls feel you need to work a little bit more?

Tom,

Congratulations! Welcome to the club, Triathlete!

We definitely need to get some "VR.com Tri Club" shirts made up.

Mark :D

Congratulations, Tom! It sounds like you were well prepared. No problems from the PF, I hope.

Sounds like you'll be doing some more triathlons - let us know when you do the next one.

Regards

David, I've got a couple of 5k's lined up. Will gear up for spring.

I feel real bad for the marshall that led us astray. She's a volunteer. These events can not be run without an army of volunteers and a lot of organization. This was not a closed course. The marshalls were very busy and very helpful, yelling to keep us on course. The real fault, in my opinion was allowing the event to get so big so fast. I think they were a little overwhelmed by the numbers and something fell through the cracks. The run course changed twice in the last week. The last change came after the packet pick-up. Twice I mumbled to myself "this wasn't on my map". Otherwise, they did a great job and everyone did have a blast.

Mark, if we create a shirt, make it quick dry. I don't need any more cotton tee shirts. You can't tell from the picture, but I did this tri with my running clothes. Next time, I'll break down and get some tri clothes. :D

Bill, No problem with the PF, thanks for remembering. If PF reared its ugly head, I'd be down in the dumps for sure. I taped my foot as a precaution because the transition area was 1/4 mile from the swim. Removing the tape added to my T1 time, but was worth it for the peace of mind. Next time I'll get one of those Velcro braces that comes off quicker.

Great to hear stories like this, Tom. I'm 3 weeks post op and can't wait to be back in the pool, ocean and on the volleyball courts in Santa Monica. How long did it take you to get back to where you were before your surgery?

Congrats Tom

Congrats Tom

Love the idea of except I think we should broaden them a bit to say VR.COM athletes or something to that effect. Congrats Tom and we look forward to those 5k results next year!

Valvathlete?

Valvathlete?

Yes the swim training paid off. But I had trouble focusing due to constant bumping into others. Was still satisfied with the swim and bicycle. Stiffened up a bit today, but still grinning ear to ear.

Eric, I waited 2 1/2 years after AVR to start dropping extra pounds and start serious exercising. The delay had nothing to do with my health, just a continuation of the non-active life style. So my experience doesn't help you much. Sorry. Anyhoo, give yourself some time to heal. Make your recovery a one-way street.

How about tee shirts that say........................

Thanks for the input, Tom. I'll listen to the cardio PTs and not push it (too much!). Talk to you soon...

Way to go

Way to go

Tom

Sounds like you had a great time - enough to be inspired to continue. You'll be doing half IM in no time....

Congrats

Russell
