We are going to Florida for Spring Break. Since I have never traveled with my CoaguChek, I was wondering if you that have traveled with them, put it in your carry on luggage or check it through?? What about any problems with the heightened security and carrying it on?? I'm already worried about setting of the metal detectors with my valve and wire ties  We plan to get to the airport plenty early!! Any other tips on traveling would be greatly appreciated, since this is my first big adventure since my MVR.

Dee - I would carry it on, just to be safe. I hate it when my suitcase comes back from vacation with a better tan than I got. You might also take a copy of the script (or form) your doc filled out to get you the machine in case there are any questions at security. Don't worry about setting off the machines. Your valve is probably made from pyrolitic carbon which is non metallic. The tie wires probably aren't big enough to set off the machine - at least they weren't the last time I went through. Chris

I have the pro-time unit. I have a rather square cosmetic case that it fits in very well. It zips all the way around so I unzip it, open up the top and send it through the scanner. I have not had any problems with it. I wouldn't trust sending in checked luggage because of the cost involved to replace one if the luggage got lost. Someone once mentioned it may be good to have a copy of the prescription for it with you. I don't, but I carry my St.Jude identification card that I figure I could produce if necessary.

Always carry meds & med devices with you. Have a friend who's a diabetic; she puts her supplies in carry-on luggage, never been questioned. RN who trained me on my ProTime told me to always carry my machine in carry-on.
I've flown maybe 10 times since my surgery. Only been searched one twice -- (1) Security at Kansas City MO, unlike other airports, didn't tell passengers to take shoes off and (2) the medical alert necklace I used to wear apparently set off the detectors in St. Louis in mid-October. Two weeks later, same necklace, no problem. Go figure.
Wiring in chest does not set off detectors. At least not at this time.

Some airports require more time to get through security, depending on whether each terminal has many security points or one or two for the whole terminal. And it depends on what time of day/day of week/season. If the airport has curbside check-in, that speeds things along. You run the risk of TSA doing a luggage check, sealing the luggage with plastic ties. I put a Swiss Army knife in an outside pocket when I check my TravelPro; have had to use it to cut off the plastic tie before.

Thanks for all of the info. My gut feeling was to carry it on, but thought I would ask some people with experience. That's what's so cool about this web site.....if you have a question about anything, someone probably has an answer or a least suggestions. :)
