saw our gp today, he took my blood pressure (120 over 80 ) and pulse ( 76 pm ) and declared everything perfect!

he decided to pull out a stethescope and listen to my heart and said "if i did not know you had a mechanical valve, i might not realise that; your valve is so quiet, i can hardly hear it!

i already knew he had 5 other patients with mechanical valves, he said if any of them were sitting anywhere in his surgery, he would hear their valves clattering away! he said they make a terrible noise!

we talked for a short while about how i was the first person ever at the hospital to have an on-x valve and how i insisted on it etc. i said that quiet did not necessarily mean perfection; the gp's reply was interesting, "the fact your valve is so silent suggests its engineering is better and that it is operating better.

actually, the gp said he knew very little about mechanical heart valves, but his unbaiased assessment reinforces my opinion that i made the correct choice in choosing the on-x valve, even though i had the surgeon bellowing in my ear that it was the wrong decision!

ha, the gp said that heart surgeons are all prima donna's! and that i had made it easier for the next person who chooses the on-x valve

but the funny thing is i have been thinking my mitral valve is thunderous! i can hear it in bed and in quiet situations, i pity people with a noisey ( st judes ) valve.

news flash - one year ago on 03-03-2008, i had my operation. this sunday i am going back to the same bar for a repeat of the beer and food i had on the way to the hospital. 2.oo pm on sunday in vulcan lane in auckland at the "occidental". any valve replacement.com members get "shouted" to a free lunch; see you there! ( i reckon i am bloody lucky i am in auckland and not usa or canada! )

Hi, lucky you having a quiet mechanical valve, mine is like a ticking time bomb lol, it drives me mad, my family laugh about it, they say we can hear you ticking and i say well at least i know its working the problem starts when you dont hear it lol, i worry when we go on holiday and sat on the plane and all you can hear is tick, tick, tick lol.
Take care Jane

If I could make it, I would! Have a drink for me too while your there.

As for the ticking valve. I'd much rather here the thing ticking and know it's working, then to not hear it and be in the dirt thinking about it.

Westie...

Congrats on your anniversary, Im only a few days in front of you as my anniversary is 2/29 (3/1 this year). I also had an On-X (Aortic) and couldn't be any happier. Sure I take the little pill every day but its assuring to know that there is a good chance I won't have to deal with OHS again. I take great inspiration from some of the folks on this website and their longevity. 20, 30, 40 years on coumadin and still going strong.

If I were in Auckland I'd surely knock back a pint or two with you. My plan is to go for a run with the wife this weekend to celebrate my anniversary. Then a shower and off to the local pub to meet a few of my close buddies for a few pints and tall tales :)

Sounds alright eh ?

No corporate plane for us. Budget cuts, and we have to at least appear to be fiscally responsible. . .

BTW, Ross -- I'm glad to see you back. Missed you for a few days. Hope all is well with you and yours.

That's very encouraging news indeed Westie. And congratulations on your text book Bp too ! I'm about 2 1/2 months out from my Aortic valve replacement and for some reason, which I'm not happy about my Bp has gone up to 160/90 ! Dont drink (much!), dont smoke, exercise like I'm preparing for the olympics, do Yoga and never eat processed food !? Whats going on there? Did your bp go up after the op ? I digress.... Glad your GP was pleased with what he heard of your valve that's great news, though I'm sure which ever valve you have there are several other factors involved defining it's noise level ? Mine (On-X) dosn't seem too loud but that's not to say I cant hear it because I can, pretty much all the time actually.
Another point of interest with the On-X. I had a two month check up the other week with my Surgeon, I think he's only ever fitted two On-X valves, so I had to push them a bit to get me one. Anyway, on listening with his Stephiscope he was genuinely surprised, and took another good listen, then remarked that it was the first Mech Valve he'd ever noted on listening to that had absolutely no murmer. And put this down the slight curve of the wall of the valve and the leaflets opening wider. He added that normally he'd expect to hear a slight but harmless murmer with mech valves as the blood curls with turbulance on exiting.
I hope things continue to go well for you.

That's very interesting about some replacement valves actually produce a slight murmur...

My On-X Aortic is extremely quite (no murmur or clicks) as long as I keep my BP under control. It thumps a bit when I'm above 140/90...which is too high. I consider it a *built in* BP monitoring device at no extra charge.

hi wood butcher

my blood pressure was perfect in the hospital and went up a bit when i left. the gp said "you are in the real world now" 4 weeks after the operation the gp said my bp had gone up a bit more and told me to make an EARLY appointment with the cardiologist, "do not wait for them to phone you."

the cardiologist put me on 2.5 grams of inhibase per day, increasing it to 5 grams daily after 2 weeks (which apparently is a low dose), saying it was to make my heart stronger and hopefully reduce the slight dialation of the left ventrical. actually, i did not realise it was just a blood pressure pill!

so thats all i am on to the get the 120/80 bp. i never exercise, never smoke, eat mostly chinese food and i do drink . and i am not mean with salt.

i do not know if bp of 160/90 is too high, but perhaps you should get hold of a cardiologist quick as the gp told me high bp and mechanical valves do not mix well.

westie, don't forget that the blood goes through the mitral valve at less pressure than through the aortic. So that may account for some of the reason that it is practically silent. But my On-X is in the aortic position, and it is pretty quiet. I hear it only rarely, and when I can hear it it sounds like a very soft tapping.

The On-X website has some reference material about what you refer to regarding turbulence, etc:

Congrats on one year anniversary of your surgery. Hope you have many more!

Congrats on anniversary and I am so glad to hear all this about the on-x. I told surgeon Wednesday that is the one I want. I knew I was making the right choice but just reading all this reassures me even more!!!!!!

hello ca

i am glad that my experiences with the on/x valve gives you some reassurance. the opportunity for new commers to learn about the real experiences and outcomes of those before them is one of the great things about vr.com.

honest, i bounced back real quick after my ohs and one year later i live a totally normal life; but make sure you move heaven and earth to get a home inr tester!

best wishes for your future ohs

Great news Westie,
I live in Levin RD1 on a lifestyle block 1 hour north from Wellington and I had my Aorta Valve replaced 3 years ago in Wakefield Hospital Wellington by Dr John Riordan,he also did a Full Maze Procedure at the same time but the Maze was a failure so now I am in Perm A/fib .
My valve does sometimes annoy me but I have Permanent A/Fib ,I take Warfarin and 5mg Cilazipril daily and still enjoy my wine and I do a lot of excersise and I just get on with life .

Regards....Kevin
