I was prescribed Toprol (50mg) after AVR 4 weeks ago. I am experiencing light headedness now. My surgeon says that there is nothing heart related that could cause this and suggests inner ear.

Has anyone experienced these symtoms after AVR.

Thanks, Dan

Dan...I am on Toprol and have had no problem from it.....At four weeks your body is still healing....You have been through a lot and headaches, sore muscles etc are not uncommon for a while....If they get worse or become very bothersome call the doctor....that's what we pay them for.

I was on Toprol for about six months, and I thought the prescribing inserts said light headedness was sometimes reported as a side effect.
Can you read the literature and find out?

What's your blood pressure when you feel this light headedness. It may be worth getting a home blood pressure monitor to check and see. Toprol (metoprolol) is used to lower blood pressure. I take it to slow my heart rate down. Because my BP naturally runs low, there have been times in the first year or so of taking the drug that it dropped my BP too low. Once my body recovered from OHS I really haven't had that experience.

Yes, having a home BP monitor (about $70) has saved me from making useless trips to the ER for a mild case of low BP. You may find that as you heal, you can slightly lower your BP med. Check with Doctor of course.
