I hadn't initially connected this to my surgery, but now I am starting to wonder. Shortly after I came home, my teeth started hurting. Not constantly, but more when I eat or drink...and because it happens when I drink, I'm pretty sure it's not chewing that is the problem.

It feels kind of like what cold sensitivity does, but a little deeper in the jaw - and doesn't only happen when cold things are in my mouth; tap water will trigger it more readily than a bowl of ice cream.

The only connection I can make to my surgery is that I had a couple of episodes of severely dry mouth while I was in the hospital. Could that have anything to do with it...and if so, is it something I need to worry about?

Were you on extended periods of antibiotics? I have heard mention of antibiotics having a negative effect on tooth enamel.

Nope. I hadn't heard that before about antibiotics and teeth, but that's certainly something to keep in mind for the future - thanks. I've been fortunate to have good dental health, so the only pre-surgery prep involving my mouth was some nuclear-powered mouthwash they had me use the night before.

I have some pain on my right side in my mouth...along the inner jaw, and the side of my tongue. I think it was from the vent tube, im not sure.

Dorsai: I find it hard to conceive of a connection, although Danny makes a plausible connection. Hope it abates.

A few of us have had sensitive teeth directly postop.
It possibly has something to do with the vent tube keeping our mouth open and forcing air over the surface of our teeth. The sensitivity does diminish over time, you can also try Sensodyne toothpaste.

Antibiotics can discolor or weaken the enamel, but this is mostly the old tetracyclines and amoxicillin in kids.

I had sensitivity on the right side of my teeth also. Hot coffee was painful for several weeks. It's gone now thankfully. I was on the vent for 2 days and that may have been the cause.

For whatever reason, the pain is almost completely gone now. I don't know why it started, but I am sure glad it has ended! :)

I'm still struggling with it three weeks out. I've been brushing with Sensodyne, and that seems to help a bit - but it's very annoying.
