I've been having pain in the middle 3 toes of ONE foot for the last day or so and seem to recall something about toe pain related to Coumadin. Is there a connection?

This is the same foot which my (dog induced) shin hematoma bled into a few months ago.

OR, could this be a sign of diabetes? What is the relationship between diabetes and feet?

Then again, maybe it's just that the toes on that foot are longer than the toes on the other foot and my shoes are too tight???

Hi there,
Is there a possibility that you might have developed a touch of gout ?
Just a thought,
Hope it sorts itself out soon
Best wishes

As far as I know, the main relationship between feet and diabetes is reduced bloodflow that can occur over time. Blood vessels in diabetics sometimes lose their resiliency. This can have a particularly noticeable effect in the smaller blood vessels in the hands and feet, where it most constricts circulation.

Hope your issue is simply a forgotten stubbed toe.

Best wishes,

Al, any of those things mentioned are possible. If the pain persists then you need to get it looked at. Hopefully it is something simple. Bob is right in his information on the effect of diabetes on blood vessels. Diabetes also can affect nerves in much the same way and can result in diabetic neuropathy and cause pain in the extremities. Are you having pain or numbness anywhere else? The reason I ask is that sometimes foot pain is pain that actually originates in the back at an inflamed or compressed nerve root. Years ago before I had back surgery the pain and cramping I was experiencing in a few of my toes and a small portion of my foot was far far worse than any in my back itself. As I said, I hope your solution is simple and quickly resolved.

It is very unlikely that it is warfarin-induced purple toes syndrome. That is rare and even rarer when someone has taken warfarin for a long period of time. Pain in the feeet rarely occurs when a person has been diabetic for less than 10 years.

That wasn't your "chainsaw" foot, was it?

Do you mean the foot that part of the tree fell on when I freed my neighbor's chain saw by cutting with my bow saw?

Yes, BUT, it ONLY fell on my Big Toe which does NOT hurt. Weird. I have an already scheduled appt with my PCP Thursday and since it's not hurting today (different shoes worn since the pain started), I'll wait until then to bring it up.

Thanks to ALL for their input.
