HI question for anyone my cadioglists just called said my INR level was 1.06 she said that the higher the number the thicker the lower no thiner is this true so my blood right now is too thick she said so what the heck is it its so confusing help chris

Are you sure she didn't say 10.6 (instead of 1.06)?
If it was 1.06, it' be pretty "thick," as you call it.
If it's 1.06, that's not good. I think 1.0 is the same as not being on Coumadin.
You may want to double-check on that INR results with her.

Either way, whoever oversees your Coumadin is certainly going to make some changes in your dose.

Chris,
At 1.06 your blood is definitely too thick.
Your INR range wants to be around 2.5 to 3.5.
This range may depend on the type of valve you have as well as which valve you had replaced.
Your doctor needs to come up with a dosage schedule to get you back on track, and he/she better do it soon.
Rich

Yikes, Chris, 1.06 is very worrisome. Please call the doc back for a new dosing schedule so that you can get it into a therapeutic range. I'm not sure what your story is (which valve was replaced), but that number is certainly too low.
I agree with the others.

Don't we go over this time and time again? I'm sensing a trend here.

New Medication

New Medication

Hey Al,
My Dr. just started me on cymbalta 60 mg. 1 cap daily. I took it for a week and started having the worst headaches and blurred vision none of theses side effects were on the scrip from the drug store. So I called my primary Dr. and he told me to stop the medication. I was wondering if you know anything about this drug. Thanks for any help?

Sherrin,
I'm not familiar with this. It is a new drug. I'm going to have Tanya (my student that you met in Golden) contact you via a private message.

You can probably measure it to ten thousandths but does it mean any more than tenths?

My understanding (as limited as it may be) is that a few tenths of a point one way or the other isn't going to be all that critical in INR and in fact, there can be some variations throughout the day, as much as .2 or .3 depending on your activity levels, diet, when you take your meds, etc.

My "target" is 3.5 - 4.0 but I can be as much as 4.3 without any change in meds unless I'm showing unusual bruising or other signs of a problem...

Now say if I test at 4.3 twice in a row (or worse,) then we change meds some.

she said that the higher the number the thicker the lower no thiner (HUH? would you please rephrase this to something understandable?)

is this true so my blood right now is too thick she said so what the heck is it its so confusing help chris

Basically, the higher the INR, the 'THINNER' your blood (i.e. less likely to clot)

An INR of 1.0 means there is NO anticoagulation effect. This the normal reading for someone NOT on Coumadin.

MOST coumadin patients with heart valves are told to keep their INR between 2.5 and 3.5 There ARE some variations (2.0 to 3.0 or 3.0 to 4.0) depending on valve type and position or other special circumstances.

Have you read Al Lodwick's web site (www.warfarinfo.com)? You REALLY need to have a better understanding of Coumadin, it's effects, and how to regulate it.
