''Hi''...Thomas has been very ill with tonsilitis for a couple of days. I took him to the doctor who prescribed an antibiotic. Last night he had a temperature of 104. I sat with him on his bed from 9pm until 1am when we finally got it down. I set my alarm for 4am to take his temperature again and gave him more paracetamol.

At 4am I noticed that there were tiny pink/purple'ish dots around his eyes. Eyelids and underneath of both eyes. They are clearly visible.

He did vomit when his temperature was at its highest 104, so I wondered could these marks have been caused from the strain of vomiting (pressure).
They look a bit like 'tiny' burst blood vessels !!! He doesnt have a rash anywhere else, and is feeling a bit better tonight.

Just wondered if anyone has seen this before !!! Thanks.

interesting form wiki (I know) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petechia
A petechia (pronounced [pɨˈtiːkiə]), plural petechiae (pɨˈtiːkɪiː) is a small (1-2mm) red or purple spot on the body, caused by a minor hemorrhage (broken capillary blood vessels)[1].

The most common cause of petechiae is through physical trauma such as a hard bout of coughing, vomiting or crying which can result in facial petechiae, especially around the eyes. Petechiae in this instance are completely harmless and usually disappear within a few days

I think that you guys could be correct. However as I have recently been hospitalized with Endocarditis, one of the symptoms they looked for but did not find was burst blood vessels in the eyes. It is possible if there is an infection that gets in the blood for it to move around and leave symptoms other places. Might not be this but something to keep in mind. Best of luck.

Jacqui:

I'm sure the vomiting caused the broken blood vessels.
I've had the same experience -- and this was before my MVR -- so bad that it looked like I had the measles. Mostly around the eyes, because the skin is thinner, and some broken vessels in the eyes.

Coughing, as with bronchitis, can do the same thing.

I agree vomiting could very well be the culprit, it happens to me almost everytime, first time I even went to the doctor to get checked and that's what it was.

*Thank you all for your replies.

Im glad to say that Thomas is feeling MUCH BETTER. He went back to school yesterday, looking pale etc but almost back to his old self. He is still taking his antibiotic.

*Funny that after all the illnesses Iv nursed him through, a lot of them involving 'vomiting' coughing etc, this has never happened before. Mind you, his temperature was sky high at the time he vomited, (104).

He takes a betablocker daily, but I doubt that would contribute to this happening !!

Once again, THANKS TO YOU ALL.
