I have a question about the time in the hospital. Me and my parents have been coming up with different answers to the same question. I remember the Dr. telling me that after surgery I would spend 5-6 days in the hospital and my Dad says the Dr. said 7-10 days. I will be going to a hospital 4hrs away from my home so I know they tend to keep out of town patients alittle longer. I got my insurance approvel letter yesterday and it had I was approved for 15 days. So what is the average stay for someone?

For someone as ornery as you, 12 hours, then they kick you out. :D

Anywhere from 4 to 10 days if there are no major complications. Do Not Follow My Example, I spent 60 days in the place.

lol Ross , how mean to call her ornery lol...........first laugh I had all day....The first surgery they kept me for 5 days , I wonder if it is longer the second surgery? Of course with me I really am the B word so I might just be kicked out the second day......:) .....Jenny

I tried to roam the halls naked, but I just got ignored. I failed to impress any of them. Since that didn't work, they kept me for 60 days so that I wouldn't be a harm to society.

Without complications, 3 to 5 days is 'normal'.

Because of your travel requirements, they might keep you a few days longer. If you get sent back to the ICU for any reason, you will most likely stay a few extra days. Anything over a week would 'most likely' mean you were having some sort of persistent 'complication'.

It's all up to your doctor. Most will allow a day or so extra if the patient 'feels the need' and expresses that desire.

Be sure to STOP and WALK around for a few minutes every hour or so on the way home. This helps to prevent CLOTS from forming. You DO NOT want clots forming!

I had little if any complications and was in for a total of 5 days and I count myself extremely lucky.................!

I had a Ross Procedure and a VSD repair and was out in 4 days. :)

It all depends on the type of surgery, inr issues, complications, hospital policies, etc. It seems most people without complications are in the 4-7 day range.

I had my AVR on Wednesday the 7/14, and was let out of the hospital on Saturday the 17th. My surgeon actually said I could go home on the 16th but I did not have the strength to leave that soon.

Now that I have been home for almost 4 weeks and still feel so sluggish, I can't believe I was in the hospital for such a short amount of time. Isn't insurance a wonderful thing!

I agree with Al on the hospital timing. Normal stay is five days, according to the surgeon. Complications are extra.

I was out in three, doing disco poses for photos of my "Frankenzipper" out in the front yard. It wasn't insurance. I think they just wanted to get rid of me.

My first company showed up less than ten minutes after I got home. He was swinging by to find out if it would be OK to visit me in the hospital. He was so shocked that I didn't look half dead that he jawed on for about an hour.

It's different for everyone. I hope your experience goes as well as mine did.

Best wishes,

Kyla went in on 8/17th finished surgery at 7:30 pm ( second surgery of the day) and her surgeon came in the next morning 18th and asked if she wanted to go home the morning of 19th. My eyes fell out of my head  and as I was putting them back in, my husband scooped his jaw off the floor and said, "Are you sure thats not a bit early?" Her cardiologist gave the surgeon a look and said, "We'll send her home when she's ready." ;) She went home the morning of the 20th. All was good.
