Firstly, I'd like to thank all you kind folks for your support and advice. It certainly made the experience a lot easier.
My surgery was September 11, and I believe it went as well as could be expected. The pain and discomfort are now becoming a fading memory, and I confidently expect my recovery to be complete.
As noted in the pre-op post I am 74 and noted a dramatic decrease in my exercise capacity, more than could be attributed to just getting old. Echo-cardiograms confirmed that my aortic valve had deteriorated to the severe to critical range. The surgery was done at Mission Hospital, and Dr. Oliver Binns was the surgeon. I'm very happy about our decision to stay in Asheville.
Yesterday, I met with the surgeon who suggested that I wait another week or so before driving and go easy on lifting. Other than that, I'm good to go. He told us that the old valve was a 9 on a scale of 1-10.
Today, I went to the orientation for the cardiac rehab program and was favorably impressed. The nurse said I looked familiar , perhaps we saw each other at a local race. She asked me if I wanted to start running and I replied "Sure, Can I?" "Absolutely" she said.
I have started walking and today I walked 4.8 miles in 1 hour, 32 minutes. My short term goal is to be able to compete in the "Superhero 5K" on October 26.
I probably won't be bike riding, outside, for a while until the bones are healed.
Thanks again to all and I'll be posting on some of the other threads.

Wow, Dave! I'm impressed! You seem to be doing really well this soon after surgery - and you're "middle-aged" too! (I always used to define middle-age as my mother's age. She passed away at 81 from non-heart-related causes, so middle age is still out there for me.)

Were you a competitive athlete prior to surgery? It sounds like it. Please stay around and share stories with some of the others. We have many members who are creeping toward "middle age" and are worried about athletic performance recovery after surgery, and it seems like you may be able to help put their minds at ease.

Wow Dave, you have 30 years on me and you're pretty much kickin my arse! I am just over 3 weeks out and yesterday i walked 3 km in one go, longest one i have done so far, then another 2 km later on.... I am very impressed with your progress and wish you all the best next weekend!!! You can do it!!!!

Shellbell, Don't lose confidence just because Dave is healing faster. Some of us just heal more slowly. As I look back on the last 2.5 years, I realize that I can now do more exercise than I could in the years before valve surgery. It just took me longer to get to this point. I had some complications and healed more slowly than others, but I have equalled or passed many of them. You may find that your recovery follows a similar trajectory - just keep at it.

Glad to hear you are doing so well. You are an inspiration to others on this forum, especially to us "older" folks who are still in the waiting room. Even if we have not achieved your level of fitness before surgery, it is encouraging to see that you are able to progress so nicely. At this rate you will be back where you want to be in no time!

Wow Dave. I am 21 years your jr and it makes me tired just reading your post. Way to go. I am 5 months post op and only do about 3 miles a day now. Could only do a mile in about 28 minutes before surgery. Keep you your good work and thanks for posting such inspirational words. Give those in the waiting room much needed encouragement.

Another three weeks plus has gone by, and all continues to go well. My recovery is going better than I anticipated. Still feeling slight chest pain, but it's not so bad and less than I expected. My short term goal of participating in a 5K run was accomplished. I finished the 3.1 miles in under 40 minutes and am delighted.
For every one facing surgery: good luck and I hope you will be as fortunate as I am.
