Here's the most likely possibility of what happened recently to Joe after his gallbladder removal and liver biopsy.

The second opinion on the pathology report has not come back yet, but this is what the thinking is on what happened to Joe. He did not have a hemorrhagic gallbladder, just filled with stones.

The doctors think the bleed was most likely caused by a condition called cardiac cirrhosis, which is caused by long term CHF. Joe's CHF has been carefully monitored, but this happened in spite of that. The inflammation of the liver set up a condition called autoanticoagulation and is most probably what was the cause of the post operative bleed.

From time to time I would notice that Joe's eyes would be slightly yellow looking, and that he looked jaundiced. The condition would go away, and his liver function tests were normal. So it seems to be related to his bouts of CHF which come and go.

In the interest of helping us all be healthier in spite of these difficult heart conditions, I would urge all of you who have CHF, to keep a careful eye on yourself. Pay attention to any pain in the right side, and keep a look out for jaundice. You might also ask your PCP to check your liver from time to time for this condition.

I wouldn't want anything like this to come up and bite you when you least expect it.

I hope I haven't scared anyone, but perhaps this will help someone in the future.

By the way, Joe is doing well, and is still in the hospital, but off all IVs and oxygen. He's walking and eating, still has a drain line, but he's back on Coumadin, so things are getting back to normal.

I am so thankful to all his wonderful doctors, the General Surgeon, the cardiology team, the ICU team, his hematologists, and all of their PAs, plus the excellent nursing staff. He wouldn't have made it without such care.

Take care and be well.

Thanks for sharing that info Nancy. That is a new one on me, so yes, I'll definately keep it in mind.

Hi Nancy

Happy to hear Joe is doing much better and functioning on his own. I know how it feels to be tied down, literally. Is he still on the Heparin pump?

We appreciate all and any information you have to offer positive or negative. That is how we learn from each other.

One of my personal fears is a post op bleed. Have been there a few times. It appears I am very sensitive to the Heparin/Coumdain combination to get the levels back up. Just wondering if others have the same concern?

I will be facing a surgical decision in about 6 months. Non cardiac related. The potential to bleed is great with this particular procedure. Don't want to elaborate here other than it is
'female related'.

Wish Joe a speedy recovery for me.

Take care.

Good information

Good information

Nancy, Keep the good information coming. You are good for my CME! You have a great hospital there in Schenectady.

We are really truly blessed to have such fine care in this community. The Wright Heart Center at Ellis Hospital is one of the top 10 hospitals for cardiology type illnesses, surgery and ICU care.

By the way, they use Lovenox in-hospital almost exclusively now. It's the new weapon of choice. The cardiologist says he doesn't use Heparin at all any more.

Ross, nice to see your picture.

Dear Nancy:

I had been familiar with cardiac liver failure, as the result of research on tricuspid regurgitation. If I recall correctly your Joe did have a repair on his tricuspid valve. The link, though, was very informative, and I thank you for including it in your note. Is it possible at all that Joe's tricuspid valve is acting up???? Just a thought.

Please give Joe our best, and thanks again for the link.

Happy Mothers' Day Nancy.

I am glad that Joe will be alright despite what has happened. Glad you share all the information you have with us. It helps get others educated and hope you get the other information soon. It is hard to see a loved suffer so. You hang in there and Joe will be stronger soon. My prayers are with you both.

Hi Marybeth-

Joe's tricuspid did not need a repair when they went in to repair the mitral, so I think it's more to do with his long standing heart problems and CHF.

Hope Wayne is doing OK.

Hi Nancy,

Glad to hear Joe is on the other side of his latest bump in the road. We're still praying for you guys and truly appreciate you're sharing what happened in case any of the rest of us encounter it.

God bless.
