Nearing the third anniversary of my replaced (bicuspid) aortic heart valve, I'm reflecting on how happy I am to be alive! I've had a pretty good year. As I was thinking about posting a new thread for this anniversary of mine, I recalled an encouraging quotation that I have read in several slightly different forms.
Many of you may have read the following quote, or one slightly different, and some of you may have never before read it, but I think all of you will appreciate it; it is most commonly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived -- this is to have succeeded."
Sounds like a bit of practical application of the Biblical Golden Rule, doesn't it?
Anyway, a few weeks ago my cardiologist told me to "keep doing what I've been doing" because he said I was "doing great." And he said that I don't have to come back to see him for a year. So that was all good news and I'm feeling some successful satisfaction that I've been already able to enjoy three more good years with my family and friends. I'm very happy to be alive.
