I am a newbie, happy to have discovered this forum with so many caring people willing to share their experiences and knowledge. In 2 weeks, I am scheduled to have surgery called Bentall's Procedure -- replacing aortic valve and root. I am 63. I think I am leaning to some sort of tissue valve instead of the mechanical. Tough choice. I would be interested in hearing from others who have had this type of surgery and made this choice. Meanwhile, I am enjoying reading your old posts and learning from them.

Bentall Procedure

Bentall Procedure

Bob,

I had the Bentall procedure on July 6th, 2004. I'm not sure how the surgery is performed with a tissue valve, but for a mechanical valve (like mine), the Dacron Graft is already connected to the valve prior to implantation. Once the valve is installed, the Dacron is trimmed to replace the section of aorta that's enlarged. In my case, I only needed about 2 to 3 inches of Dacron. After that, my original aorta tapered down very nicely. It's all one nice package. Note: The surgery does takes a little longer than a valve only replacement.

One possible benefit of the Bentall procedure is a slight reduction in the clotting potential. According to the surgeon who installed the graft, the valve & conduit provide a smoother flow path into the aorta, which "might" reduce the clotting potential immediately downstream of the valve. However, Coumadin is still ALWAYS required for a mechanical valve.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Bentall's

Bentall's

Buzz,

That helps very much -- thank you! My surgeon did mention a stentless bioprosthesis that is a combination replacement. I need to do some more research and talk to him again.

It is a boost to the morale just to talk to someone who has had the Bentall's.

Best wishes,

Bob

Surgery date

Surgery date

Thanks very much, Ann. My surgery date is February 16, and my pre-op is on the 14th -- Valentine's Day! A good day to concentrate on the heart, I reckon.

I am reading and reading and learning and learning. This website is a godsend.

BionicBob,
Welcome to the group. Very supportive and knowledgeable bunch here. Just had my fourth anniversary of my surgery - mechanical St. Jude. Taking Coumadin hasn't been a big deal for me at all.
Good luck with everything and keep us posted on your situation.
Mark
