We're back...............did ya miss me? :D I sure missed y'all. Okay, I am once again overdue for an update, but my butt has been dragging all week since we got home . I feel like I have been run over by a semi and, unfortunately, lived to tell about it. I kept thinking I would work up an update one of these days (probably when I get around to mailing out my damn Christmas cards! heehee!), but I am still unpacking.........ugh! We got in at 8:00 Sunday night and I had to go right back to work MOnday! Okay, enough of my whining (it's just that I do that so well.......... :D ).

Reader's Digest version: The Make a Wish thing all fell apart at the last minute due to miscommunications between MAW and Katie's PC (her PC called us at 6:30 PM Friday - the week prior - just to let us know that he had authorized her for travel; then the following Wed. the MAW folks were still saying that they didn't have the authorization, so dunno what happened there). Anyway, we decided just to bite the bullet and take the kids on our own nickel (okay - lots of nickels) and table Katie's wish for now.........so there we were trying to jump through hoops to try and get some sort of package worked out - and we did - barely - we made reservations the day before we left - a week ago Saturday - well, almost two weeks now (my spring break)..............

You know what, though? Things worked out for the best. I am so glad that we went, but I am even happier that the wish fell through. I want it to be really special for Katie - something that she really wants - and this was not it. She set the mood for the trip that Saturday morning we left. My little drama queen decided that she did not want to go. She began crying and wringing her hands in despair. Thinking that she associates long trips with surgery, we assured her this was a vacation and nothing medical was involved. This was to no avail. She ran around the living room, all the while picking up her toys and kissing them, crying, "I don't want to leave my toys. I will miss my toys. I will miss my Texas. I don't want to leave my Texas. I will miss my couch. I will miss my tv." Then she drug her little stool over to the wall of pictures and started kissing all of the pictures on the wall she could reach. " I will miss my pictures. I will miss my Baby Trip picture (as she is kissing and fondling it!)" Then she flung herself on the couch and declared that she was not going.................so we strapped her in her car seat, kicking and screaming ..............................sigh!

What a way to start a trip! Although she did eventually calm down, Katie was NOT thrilled with Disney World. I had forgotten that Disney is set up for the hearing impaired - or at least it seems that way. Everything is so loud - the rides, the shows, even the restaurants.......... and Katie hates loud noises. Hard to believe as loud as that little hellion is herself, but she does. And she hates going too fast and she hates things flying in her face...........and water in her face.........and anything else in her face. So that doesn't leave a whole lot. She wanted to go to the 3-D bug show, so we went............and five minutes later she is screaming to get out of there after water was squirted in her face and bugs were flying at her...................and of course, we were smack dab in the middle of the row. Heehee! so if you take all of this into consideration, it doesn't leave a whole lot to do. And "It's a Small World" ride was closed - for refurbishment - the one ride that she would have adored was closed! Once she quite crying on the way down, she was singing that very song - and then it is closed!!!! She did like Animal Kingdom, Bear in the Big Blue House, the Dumbo ride, the monorail, the characters - especially the princesses (although she was a little miffed that the princesses and other kids weren't asking her for her autograph because "I'm a real princess, too - Princess Katielion"), and her "memry" (autograph) books, but she would have been just as happy at the Disney store or at the beach. And it would have helped if the weather would have cooperated - cold and wet, but the lines were very short. Trip had a blast and rode Space Mountain three times all within about an hour's timeframe.

The best part of the trip, though, was the NickHotel. They just opened
up and aren't even through with the renovation yet - the grand opening
isn't until May, but they did have some kid suites converted. You have
to take your kids or grandkids there. The kids' room has bunk beds and is painted with a scene from one of the Nick shows. Unfortunately, all we could manage to get is one night there as they were booked solid. They thought they had us in a Rugrats room, but it turned out to be the Fairly Odd Parents. Katie would have preferred Sponge Bob, but we were lucky just to get a room there period. The pool was heated and had lots of slides, etc. Then they had a Nick show poolside and slimed some kids. Kids twelve and under eat free. And they had some of the Nick characters, but they had just started it the day before, so no Sponge Bob yet, just the Fairly Odd Parents - Bill and Cozmo - and Dora. Check it out at www.Nickhotel.com. It is going to be really neat when they get it all done. Okay, I am rambling and this was supposed to be short..............................

Anyway, I am so glad we went - lots of good memories - and it would
always have bugged me - but I am NOT going to go there - I'm just not,
but I am really glad this was not Katie's wish trip. This just tells me that Katie is going to fly through surgery and wish for something she really wants later - although she is already back to wanting to know when Lola Bunny is going to come to life.................sigh! (While I am now trying to get her to say "Brad PItt in Hawaii"! :D ) If I ever do 2300 miles roundtrip in a car with two kids, it will be too soon for me...............remind me of this in June when we have to drive to Illinois for my step-daughter's wedding ( no RV this time and it will be warm)..............and what I would have given for Katie NOT to have been potty-trained. We would no sooner get back on the road when she would declare that she had to go pee-pee. And then there was the time she ran up to Don in the restaurant line and announced to everyone within ear shot that she had to go poop ! When a red-faced Don tried to stall her, she yelled even louder, "No, Daddy, I have to poop riiiiiiiight NOW!" Sheeeeeeesh! So you know who got the dubious honor of that one - we did make it in time, though, which is always a good thing. :D

And we heard from Dr. Bove while we were gone - I think it came in the
day we left, wouldn't ya know?. He said we can hold off on Katie's surgery until this summer, so we are thinking July now...... I guess we will have to give Michigan a buzz and see if that is a go with them.
...........so quasi-good news on that front..................although I
would prefer not to do it at all...........................3rd time was
supposed to be the charm.......................

Okay, so much for the RD version. Thank you so much for all of your
support through this venture. Oh, btw, did I mention that we are
leaving in the AM for our annual family Boy Scout camping trip? No rest
for the weary - wish I was as excited about it as Katie is................unless she is back to kissing pictures in the morning. We are going to go camp out at the dinosaur tracks in Glen Rose................supposed to rain all weekend...........and I have a blasted head cold...................sounds like fun to me..................yeehaw! Hugs to you all. J.
P.S. Niki, I owe you a long post and lengthy explanation...........heehee! Will try and "talk" to ya Sunday PM if I survive the dinosaurs. Hope you are doing well. Love ya. J.

Take care and God bless, Janet, Trip (12 HH & one heckuva Boy Scout),

Gee Janet such a dull and boring life. What do you do to fill the time? :D

When I took my 3 boys, 1 had to be the pits about the whole thing. Tried his best to ruin the day, but we simply let him sit and watch his brothers have fun. Soon, he decided to stop being a crank and enjoy himself some. He missed many many things though before deciding, practically the whole day really.

Glad to hear that you've gotten the mental image for life. It's something you won't forget no matter whether it was good or bad.

I emailed Mendy also!

Hi Janet! Glad you are all back in one piece. I'm also glad that this didn't turn out to be Katie's wish, since it wasn't 100% magical for her. Sounds like it was Trip's wish thought!

Why is it we always come home from vacations, feeling like we need a vacation?

Hi Janet,

Your post is giving me guilt pangs as I too have been thinking for several days(or has it been weeks) :D that I really needed to post an update here!
But anyways I am very glad that you got to go on this trip, sorry it didnt work out with MAW - will you re-try for a different trip throguh them? And especially glad that you can hold off until July/Summer for surgery on Miss Katie!!

Love and Hugs,

Erica

Hi Janet!!!

Hi Janet!!!

I am so glad to hear that you and yours went. I am certain that Katie and Trip will remember this trip for quite a long time, and I hope that it was able to give you some relief from the stress of Katie's medical issues and everything else that has happened lately. I hope you all had a great time and get to do something else really special soon. Take Care, Rest Well...Harrybaby666 :D :D

hi!

hi!

Hi Janet! I was wondering where you were! Glad you have brought back some good memories of the trip! Hope 'Its a small world' is open by August when we go - cos thats what Chloe wants to see the most! lol) It's good that you didn't get to use Katies wish if it wasn't her absolute dream anyway - and its great that they think Katie won't need surgery for a little longer! Surely you can persuade her to say the words 'Brad Pitt' by then!!

Hope you get some time for a rest soon!

Emma

PS - have spoken to Dan a few times and they are not doing too bad. Jo is having a c-section on Monday so they are busy thinking about that right now too!

Janet,

Despite all the problems you describe, the little girl in that photo has happy memories in her mind and on her face. She will remember the trip happily, I think.

Bummer about Small World. I am planning a trip to Disney World this summer. I will call and make sure SW is open because I still think it is one of the most beautiful attractions at DW. Even if I can't get the song out of my head for weeks after.

Also trying to catch the first shuttle launch. Have to plan this trip very carefully.

Thanks for sharing and I hope something fabulous comes your way for Katie's wish.

*chuckles*

But, that was the detailed RD version...right? ;)

I'm so glad you all went on the trip. But, it seems as if the road trip was the best part.... lol...j/k of course! Katie will have some wonderful memories that will stay with her throughout her life...as will you, too, Janet. And, that, is the best part of it all, imho.

Happy to have you back online with us....

What's it like to buy your favorite car brand new? Wish I knew...

Last summer (June I think?) we took our son, Patrick (he was four) up to Niagara Falls, Ontario for a few days.

It was his first "big" trip with us, first time away for a vacation. Erica and I had been there several months before for our honeymoon and I've been there several times before that, both sides of the Falls, so we knew what was where and how to get there.

We didn't know how Patrick would handle it. He's not real keen on loud noises and he's never seen that many people in small areas like that. However, he's seen the commercials for Marineland (like SeaWorld) a billion times and loves 'em and we really wanted to try and take him there to see the whales and stuff in person.

He ate that up, still talks about it all the time.

At home, he sleeps with a nightlight and occassionally with another light on in his room. He doesn't care for the dark.

We knew we couldn't do this in a hotel room, that if the curtains were open even a little, it would be too bright and noisy (street noise AND the noise of Niagara Falls itself) to sleep.

First night, wen't to bed at about 11pm. He slept like a ROCK until well past 9am which he NEVER does.

Did that every night we were there. LOVED being in a hotel, loved the "elligator" ride that took us from our floor to the main lobby and back again. LOVED the indoor pool.

He liked eating out every day for every meal. He loved riding in mommies lap as daddy pushed 'em both all over the tourist district of Niagara Falls....

One night we were out in the parkinglot outside the main lobby of the hotel when fireworks went off over Falls. they do it every Friday and Saturday apparently. Patrick's not keen on the noise. He likes watching the colors and such, but doesn't like the bangs because he hasn't figured out how to anticipate them. He practically ran inside the hotel when it started.

There's also a "haunted house" themed amusment between the hotel and the main tourist strip and on occassion some idiot flies out from the entrance to the place in either all black (including a covered face) or dressed as Jason from whatever movie that was. I was up once with some friends and saw this idiocy and damn near clocked the guy hard to the ground when he jumped out at our group.

Anyways, Patrick wasn't keen on that one either, nor was my wife.

We did pick the wrong time of year to go, the summer season was going full tilt. When we went in September (the honeymoon) it was much more quiet and relaxed.

We also went to this Butterfly conservatory which Patrick loved because there were hundreds of cool butterflies all over the place, but hated because therre were HUNDREDS of butterflies all over the place and many of them were flying right up to him.... He had mixed feelings about that one.

Find out when the season is winding down, go off season if you can when the weather's still warm but the crowds are smaller (and the hotel rates are MUCH cheaper!)
Plan ahead for the highlights that you want to see, one highlight a day is more than enough. take time to relax, even if it means lounging around the hotel pool for an afternoon or even in the hotel room. Kids can have fun surfing through the different TV channels while mom and dad ease their aching feet after a morning of walking to and from breakfast.

Vacation should be just that, VACATION. We tried a few times to pack too much stuff into one day while we were at the Falls and it just made for a lot of unpleasantness.

Oh yeah, they have this "Maid of the Mist" thing which is basically a few heavy duty tugboats with space for maybe 60-70 passengers that go out into the lower Niagara River (that's where the falls are) and fight their way upstream to give passengers an up clsoe and WET look at the Falls. It's actually a pretty cool trip and you see some great views of the whole area, a nice perspective, however you're on a boat with a LOT of other people, the ride is a little rough and there's no place to go once you get on board. We debated the idea of taking our son for maybe two weeks before the trip, even the day we were down there where you get your tickets and such we were going back and forth with it but finally decided not to try it.

If we took him and he didn't like any part of it, we would have been screwed. Especially if it was early on. The wait from when you buy your tickets to when you're actually on the boat is close to half an hour. After than you're stuck on a boat, no place to go, no where to run to. If he didn't like any part of that (I was mostly worried about how he'd take to the boat rocking back and forth in the rough water) it would have been a LONG, bad trip...

He LOVED Marineland though. Light crowds, got a chance to see dolphins up close as well as killer and baluga whales and even "minature" deer in a petting/feeding area... My wife wanted to pet/feed a baluga whale and we did that, also petted a killer whale. Patrick got to do it too a little bit and I got it all on videotape... Good stuff.

We'd go to Marineland some time again. That was worth it.

There's another park in Southern Ontario, "African Lion Safari" which is an enclosed lot of Idunnohowmany acres with a number of different animals you might find on the great Sahara plains or something. You can enter the "wildlife park" as part of a group on a park owned tour bus of sorts or you can drive out in your own car which can be OK if you DON'T roll down the windows, DON'T care about monkeys pulling all loose/small parts off the vehicle, and DON'T panic when the elephants charge...

They have some other exhibits going on too including instructional shows that demonstrate how various birds of prey catch their prey. They had elephants doing tricks and a few other things.

My family went up once and, among other things, got to see a few keepers bring a group of elephants out from the park area to a pond where they could go take a quick swim to cool off. We were standing, with no real protection, about 15 feet from where the line of elephants walked out to get to the pond. that was impressive.

The exchange rates are nice, but you'll find that the value of products and services doesn't change that much. A can of Coke in the US might be 65 cents. In Canada, the exchange rate sets the value of your US dollar at about $137 something Canadian, but that can of Coke will cost you $1.00 in Canadian funds so you haven't gained more than a few pennys in the translation, if that.

Gas is the same way, it may seem cheaper, well under 90 cents a litre, but litres are only about half a gallon. (very rough figures here) so in the end the price is still about the same.

Now in saying that, we DID get a few good bargains on clothing. Canadian taxes are refundable to non-Canadians with certain limitations.

So there's might NOT so Reader's Digest family vacation story...

Aren't you glad I don't have slides or a projector!

Well I think I need a "Bex" and a lie-down after reading that!!! Still, I'm sure you'll all have wonderful memories of the "good" and the "bad" for many years to come.

.....Meanwhile, I'll be hoping Katie comes to appreciate the fine qualities Mr Pitt has to offer...! :D :D

Anna : )

Thank you guys so much...........

Thank you guys so much...........

for reading our saga. We survived the campout, although it did rain from about 5PM until 8 PM SAturday........just enough to get everything nice and muddy...........and damp and cold..........got down in the forties, which I know is pretty tame to you Yanks, but I am a true whimp when it comes to cold! And I hadn't marched.........kerhum..........hiked five miles since I retired from the military two years ago, so every muscle in my body is screaming in laughter at me right now. And just so you know, the dinosaur tracks are still there.............don't look much different from when I saw them thirty years ago with my girl scout troop. Katie, though, has decided that she loves camping and can't wait to go back. She wants me to quit working and Trip to drop out of school (Don retired from the military 1 Feb) so we can camp out all the time. Oh, by the way, she has already started making plans for the NEXT time we go to Disney, the little toot, so I guess she liked it more than she let on. Hmmmmmm.......wonder if MAW pays college tuition???? Anyway, thanks so much again for all of your support.

Ross: Yes, I am definitely mental for life - a real basketcase for sure. :D Thanks for e-mailing Mendy. I knew I could count on you. P.S. How come you never talk about your kids? I didn't know you had three boys!!! No wonder you had to have a valve job......... :D Love to hear about them sometime.

Karlynn: You got that one right............a vacation with just me..........well, and maybe the "boys." :D I've still got my pic.

Marsha: Thanks for making me spew Dr. Pepper all over my keyboard! :D Yep, you call with a plumbing problem. "Uh, my toilet is backing up in my hotel room." "Well, we can't get anyone on it until tomorrow, but have a magical day!" :D Heehee! Definitely overdosed on that one.

Emma: I definitely hope it is open since you guys have to travel even farther than us. Missed you. HOpe Chloe is doing well. Do y'all have a MAW type of thing over there?

Gina: Think twice about that shuttle. I sure would hate to find your still clicking valve in some field out in East Texas...........takes a licking and keeps on clicking.......... :D Hope IASW is open for you guys.

Erica: I will have to look for your update. Yeah, our understanding is that once Katie is approved, she stays approved...............course they probably don't mean indefinitely, but we are going to wait now until she is old enough to really decide for herself............Brad Pitt in Hawaii, Brad Pitt in Hawaii, etc. :D

Cort: Aw, shucks! Thank you. Missed you, too. Will give you a PM in a couple of days and fill you in on the ring.

Harry: Oh, Harry, thank you. You always say the sweetest things. Hugs.

Harpy: Dunno when we will make it to Niagara Falls, but I have always wanted to go...............that will be one more hefty roadtrip, though. Thanks for the tips.

Anna: What the heck is a "bex"? If we get the Brad Pitt thing down, I will see if we can take Aunt Anna! :D

Love you guys and thanks again. J.
