I got a compliment from my ACT physician today! as many of you will remember, I went to see him in January with the intention of "firing" him, and wound up home testing (which I had wanted anyway) and e-mailing him the results.

I haven't told any of you yet, but over the past 3 weeks I have spent 2 separate days in ER, with a screaming belly-ache - I kept telling them I had not experienced pain like it, even after OHS. Had all the bloodwork (and the bruises) and a CT scan (my first ever) the first visit, they said nothing there, gave me Rx for painkillers and said if it gets worse, come back. Went back on the Thursday, was there for 24 hours, no food (in case they had to operate) and my INR was over 6.2 at one point (tried to tell them they wouldn't be operating on me with an INR of 6.2 !!!). I kept telling them to let me eat . .that would help it go down. but no, nothing by mouth was what the doc ordered and that's what I got. So, after lots of testing (more bloodwork, an abdominal ultrasound) it turns out that I had a bladder infection, got a Rx for antibiotics and was sent home, having had no food or drink for over 24 hours, did not have my morning meds (large dose of anti-depressants, 1 beta blocker and one BP pill). When I asked, the nurse said doc had not ordered meds for me, it wouldn't harm me to miss the beta blocker for once, and I didn't need the BP one anyway, as my BP was low - they had to wake me up every time to take it for crying out loud, I had been in such pain I had not slept for 3 days, and they gave me demerol, which knocks me out- of course my BP was low. Was also told that as INR was so high, withhold 3 doses, and contact my ACT management. HAH ! Family physician was on vacation, as was ACT doc, so I withheld 2 days, started eating and moving around again; after my 2 held doses, I went back to my regular dosing, and tested 2 days later - IN RANGE !!!!!!!!!

ACT physician came back from vacation today and said in his e-mail back to me

"I think you have the hang of it and are balancing quite well"

So, a huge thank you to all here who have helped educate me on managing warfarin!

I'm sorry to hear of your troubles.....but you took control and survived. Good for you.
Many of us probably owe our lives to the education we have received here and also from Al Lodwick.
And the doctors say to "stay off the internet". HA

When something actually works and works for so many, something about it must be right huh?

marsha :

seems it was the bladder infection; antibiotics helped immensely, CTscan, upper abdominal and pelvic ultrasound showed nothing - well, nothing too abnormal - I knew about the fibroids, so no big shock there!

Oh, I'm over it for the most part! I just wanted a pat on the back for my being able to manage my warfarin myself, for having the courage to do so, and say a huge THANKS to all here for their help in getting me there ! If I had wanted well wishes (but I'm not refusing them either :) and I thank you for them) I would have posted in small talk - this post was more about the warfarin side of things !

It's empowering to understand anticoagulation management, how to adjust your own dosages and get the results you anticipated, to realize you don't need to be a rocket scientist or M.D. or D.O. to be able to do this, to home-test, whatever.
In other words, we have taken most of the shackles off our ankles!!! I say most of because we still have to deal with bridging, etc., with some procedures. But our knowledge and ability of how to deal with warfarin puts us in the driver's seat.
