Ross, thanks for your help in alerting us to the virus.

I did have it...in fact found it twice.

It is purged or whatever and Stingered and I now have Mcafee guarding the gates. DH had been telling me since I got the laptop in March to get Norton or Mcafee...yea, I will...no I got the virus first. Well a day and a half later I have learned a lot about my computer and sat on the phone with the "experts" for countless hours. Man I bet they are going crazy.

Thanks again.

Jean just so you know. It wouldn't have mattered if you had the program at that moment anyway. The only thing that would have saved you would have been to heed the warnings of Microsoft, as they brought this possibility to light on July 16. They made the patch and had it available then. A lot of people fail to check the Windows update site for Critical Updates for their Operating Systems. As we all know, Microsoft is not even remotely close to having a secure operating system of any sort so far. All we can do is keep patching as they find these vulnerabilites and hope for the best.

Bottom line is, the only thing that would have saved you then would've been to have the patch installed before the attack.

Anyone with Windows Operating Systems, I highly recommend subscribing to Microsoft Technet Security Bulletins Service. If you do, you'll have notice to vulnerabilities discovered and patches download links provided to you in your email. Microsoft does not email patches of any sort. They only direct you to one of their sites for downloading them. Remember that!!!!

P.S. Jean be sure to keep your virus definitions up to date. I don't know how often McAfee releases them, but I get new ones every single day from Norton. You have to stay on top of those also.

I, too, was glad to find out what was wrong with my computer! I'm pretty illiterate about the thing--I just know how to surf and find out stuff I want to know. I have a new computer and have recently changed ISP's so I was afraid one of those was the problem when that message kept popping up every little bit yesterday and knocking me off. I called my daughter, the computer expert, (really! although she's a stay-at-home mom now) and she hadn't heard of anything yet. Then I got on valvereplacement.com and saw your alert!

Daughter came and fixed it up for me this morning!

I'm assuming Hank had the patch applied or I don't think we'd be up and running unless he's running Apache.

I'm glad a little insight has helped many here. I try to let everyone know if it's a BIG problem right away.
