Statements from my insurer have begun to arrive. So far the allowed amount for the hospital alone, totaled over $100,000. Which leaves me wondering what the actual billed amount was.

No statement as of yet for Dr. Lester(the surgeon). That has to be astronomical also.

Note- My deductible and out of pocket($3,000) have already been met. That from bills related to my original hosp. stay from 7-30 to 8-6.

I think my mitral valve, maze procedure, and pacemaker ran about $250,000 total. The "allowed" charge I think ran about $189,000. I spent 10 days in ICU because of the heart rate/ultimate need for pacer.

Watch your bills, though. I ran into problems with the hospital lab not being "in network" and trying to strong arm an extra $1500 from me not covered by UHC. You've not seen so much cussing, by phone and in writing, including a written complaint to the state insurance board!

I know your saying, "Thank God for health insurance" but before it's all said and done, I bet your saying something a little different and perhaps vulgar. They have a way of making it so.

My husband and I pay a total of 88 dollars a month for 100% medical and dental/ortho coverage within Canada. If I'm travelling, we can opt for an additional coverage that would reimburse our expenses related to medical emergencies and illness while on holiday and the cost of med evac travel if needed, for an extra 240 dollar annual premium (we're allowed to make changes once a year, only). So, yep, thank goodness for the insurance. I've never used the extra since I've been home in Canada, but I'd hate to think of the costs I could incur if I didn't have it.
