Hi my father (aged 90) is due to have a procedure this coming Wednesday to replace his aortic valve due I believe to stenosis of the same. I understand that he is to have tissue valve replacement (pigs?). Can anyone enlighten me as to wether or not my father will need to go on anti rejection meds following this procedure?
Regards:confused:

No Terry...most everyone here has had valve replacement or is waiting to have it. I had a mechanical valve put in on July 16, 2009...I feel great and am on coumdin but no anti-rejection drugs at all! I don't think anyone has ever had too...and with all my searching and reading it never came up. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think I am.

Good Luck to your Dad!

He will not have to take anti-rejection meds. I had a porcine (pig) valve put in last year at 45. Best of luck to both you and your dad.

Hi and Welcome.

Want to wish your Dad well and hope he has a successful surgery and uneventful recovery. As the others have said, he will not need anti-rejection drugs. His surgeon may order a three month course of coumadin while he heals but most usually, it will only be temporary need for Anti-coagulation therapy.

Hi Terry

No, he won't need anti-rejection drugs.

Where is he having it done? I had a surgeon from St George's in Tooting.

Hi Sue, thanks for the info, my old chaps having the op in Basildon hospital Essex. Newish unit and very smart. Good to hear from people who have experience of the procedure. At 90 yrs I guess it's fingers crossed! Regards Terry

Cooker couldn't have said it any better for me - Welcome and best wishes too.

Hi, something at the end of your kind message made me smile, my old chap has been told for seventy years that his heart murmur would not be a problem, well it sure is now! but then he is 90.Thanks, Terry (with fingers crossed):

Thanks to all you kind people for your good luck wishes, its such a relief for me and my father to know there are so many lovely people out there. Terry

I'm curious, when you said procedure to replace his valve, are you talking about open heart surgery or is he having it replaced in the cath lab? I'm only asking because he is 90.

Terry:

I will keep your dad in my prayers. Please post when you can so we'll know he's doing just fine.

BTW, an acquaintance in New Hampshire (USA) told me in the last 2 months that when her mom was awaiting AVR, her mom's roommate in the hospital was a woman in her 90s and she had also had valve replacement.

I have heard of one other case, too.
