My mom lives in some apartments for elderly people that can still care for themselves. Her neighbor is on coumadin because she had a mechanical heart valve. My mom was very upset Sunday when we stopped by because her neighbor had a stroke and was going to have to be put in a home. I got the rest of the story last night. She had some teeth pulled last week and the dentist told her to stop her coumadin for five days. I got so mad when she told me this. My husband is on coumadin and if anybody told him to stop taking his coumadin for five days without some type of bridgeing I would throw one of my famous protective wife fits. I told mom that if any of her children want to talk to me about this they could call. I would think at the least the dentist should know what his actions caused.

I should think that a malpractice attorney would also be rather interested in the consequences of the dentist's lousy directive.

now and then I need to switch dentists due to insurance.. I always ask if they have coumadin patients and then how they handle that situation.. the most I will ever skip is one day and I better be thru the roof on my INR for that to happen.. I agree, some type of bridging the gap needs to occur before I stop.. but most of my dentists are fine with me not stopping.. they may suggest a small stoppage, but they know i'm against it, so it's mute point and we deal with it.

My dentist seems to know as much or more than my cardiologist about coumadin therapy.

What a tragic, tragic and senseless situation. Her family must be furious.

This is all so preventable.

Dentists and gastroenterologists seem to be the hugest offenders when it comes to Coumadin and lack of knowledge. And not only that, but they are adamant about their lack of knowledge  , not wishing to budge or do the right thing.

I bet the dentist didn't lose a night's sleep over what he did.

The American Dental Association has had guidelines on this out since at least 1997. It would almost be a slam dunk for malpractice if someone is unfamiliar with 6 year old guidelines.

Yes indeed, that's the expert, the professional! How sad, but I know from my mother, everything the doctor, dentist said was never questioned; this poor lady was probably just doing as she was told. The elderly need advocates, my mom lived in a similar building and stuff like this happened all the time. My prayers go out to her and her family.

As a post script...I never thought to ask my dentist how he would handle a more serious dental procedure....so far only fillings and cleaning. I will certainly discuss this with him.
