Hi everyone

The TEE has been done and didn't reveal anything new, only the severe aortic regurg.

While it wasn't the most pleasant experience that I've had, it wasn't the worst either. I wasn't as lucky with the conscience sedation as some of the others here. They Used Versed and Demerol and I would guess not enough of it. I still gaged a few times on the transducer and have a bit of a sore throat.

I'm glad it's over and I'm happy that nothing new has surfaced to worry about.

I should know more about all the test results next Wednesday when I see the PCP.

Thanks Everyone for helping calm my fears over this proceedure. ;)

Geez Ross... sorry about the sore throat and all. Glad to hear that nothing new is wrong though.

Take care,
Zazzy

Sorry you had some problems, Ross. But the good news is that there wasn't anything other than what was expected.

It's over with now. Don't have to worry about TEEs anymore for a long while.

Take care,

Hey Ross - so glad that it's over now and nothing new found. I am sure that relieves your mind some. Just take it easy and drink soothing things and the sore throat will be gone soon. God bless

Hi Ross,

Glad you got through it OK. I've had 2 TEE's and multiple endoscopy's to check my esophagas (GERD). After my first TEE, my throat was a little sore for a day. After my second, no soreness at all.

My GI doc told me I woke up once in the middle of a procedure (I believe the new nurse forgot to spray my throat in spite of the fact that it was 'checked off' on the procedure sheet). The important point is that after having had some choking experiences, they simply give me enough VERSED that I am basically 'out of it' during the procedure and don't remember a thing.

Having hose pushed down one's throat seems to be more 'discomforting' that going through a catheterization !

Al I think you said it all in the last sentence. lol

Today my throat is much better then it was last night. I awoke ever single time I swallowed. Ouch. I think the main thing was not enough numbing agent to start with, coupled with somewhat delayed sedation and Doctor that I think was in a hurry. I won't let that happen again. I awoke from a Bronchoscopy once like that and that was a bit unsettling also.

Again thank you all!!!!!!!

I think they said...."Just Say AAAAHHHH" to me when I had my TEE! Missed the whole darn thing due to the sedative trip.

Hi Ross

Glad you made it though your TEE.

Usually don't like to talk about my experiences with that particular test because they were less than pleasant.

I am allergic to Versed. My conscious sedation comes long after I complete the test. And, into the next day.

I would fall asleep with no warning into the next day. Not feeling good for 48 hours. Had the same concern with than darn transducer. They finally got the hint it was going nowhere....so they used the smallest size. Probably a children's.

Just wanted to let you know your not alone. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks for the input Gina.

I sort of had a feeling I might be having a problem as soon as the Doc said, "Give him 1 of Versed". I had "2" of Versed for the Heart Catheterization and that only took the edge off while I remained pretty much unphased. A little while into the procedure, Doc ordered more Demerol. I'm no pharmacist, but from what everyone has experienced, I think he should have ordered more Versed for me? I sometimes wonder if Versed does anything at all for me.

Sorry to hear of your troubles with the medication. I got a real good idea what it was like for you.

I've been lucky to have had 2 open heart surgeries and have not experienced a TEE test. I must have had nice doctors!

Yes, 2 units (cc?) of VERSED seems to 'take the edge off' for me. For my endoscopys, they give me 5 units. You want to be SURE whoever is administering the Versed knows what they are doing. If given too fast, there is a (small) chance that it can stop your breathing, especially for patients with lung conditions.

Oh yes, after spraying the back of my mouth with the awful tasting numbing agent, then they tell me to swallow it. YUCK... But it beats
choking on the tube !

Then you need to be driven home and stay put for the rest of the day. Even though you may seem normal to others, there is an amnesia effect that can last up to several hours afterward. Because of that, many doctors won't even talk with you after the procedure, but talk with whoever brought you and send you home with writen discharge instructions.

The numbing agent in my case was Hurricaine and when you swallow that stuff, not only did it taste horrible, but it burned as well.

To give you a better idea of how "With it" I was, as soon as the Doc was done, I looked at him and asked if he got all the pictures that the surgeon wanted. I could follow his reply with no problem and he asked if anyone was waiting to be told of the results to which I replied, "Yes, my wife is in the waiting room".

I think the next time, I'm going to be sure that they give me at least 2 of Versed to start with and increase from there. That was a little too "Real" for me.
