Hi,

Well we're looking at Tom going in for AVR some time in the next two weeks. At least that's what we're hoping for. He would go tomorrow if he could.

I'm wondering if there are any particular tapes or books that help prepare someone for a successful surgery experience, e.g. muscle relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises, etc. I read some emails in this pre-surgery forum and especially appreciated the arm and shoulder exercises which we've started to do.

Input would be great. Thanks, Judith

Some have found that getting away for a short (weekend?) vacation somewhere that they truly enjoy can be freeing. This would be a quiet vacation, in a place where the patient-to-be has felt relaxed and truly enjoyed his or her surroundings.

The decisions have all been made, the surgeon is ready. After you get through the bureaucracy of the hospital registration, they drive, and the cut-ee does best to relax and let them. The SO can help by watching out for the patent's interest with the staff. Nancy is the queen of the patient advocates, for what she did for her husband Joe over the years, so you might want to look up some of her postings.

Best wishes,

Pre-op Relaxation

I spent the week before my AVR surgery in Mexico playing golf and walking on the beach. It really helped keep my mind off the surgery.

If you folks have an activity you're passionate about, engaging in it is a real stress reliever. Stay busy and focused on things other than the upcoming surgery.
