Hi,

I have been suffering from a tennis elbow pain for three weeks and my doctor will see me next week. The pain is getting worse sometimes despite I have been resting my arm and doing some of the tendon safe strengthening exercises.

Since I have a wonderful relationship with Advil, I took 200mg yesterday pm, and 200 mg after breakfast this morning. And voila, my pain is much less.

As you know, I am on Warfarin. My questions are:

For when will it remain safe to take Advil? (how many more pills/strength?)
Should I test my INR today or tomorrow to be on the safe side?

Any advice out of your experience/knowledge will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Advil isn't going to do thing to your INR. Just stay within the recommended dosing and don't double up doses or the FDA will want to screw with it too.

Did you check w/your cardio if taking Advil is okay my friend?? Reason I ask is because my cardios have banned me from taking Advil due to me taking coumadin? And it's not just recently --- for many years they have advised me against taking it. So......

I believe that docs discourage Advil along with Aspririn, because they have anti-platelet properties which won't affect the INR number, but will affect the rate of coagulation should a bleed happen.
Some of our members on ACT have taken Advil in small doses for a short time when absolutely necessary.
Eva, I think your INR was a bit low anyway, so don't worry too much. But I would use ice and/or heat for that elbow.

Thanks, everyone for your advice.

Norma, I did not check with my cardio nor physician. Will ask on Tuesday when I see my physician.

Ross, do not worry about me abusing the Advil. I won't.

Bina, I thought the same way you did...since my INR is low, I took the risk of taking low dose of Advil hoping it relieves the inflammation, and I feel much better.

I take Advil (ibuprofen) for when I need pain relief. Never had a bleeding issue.

Thanks, Karlynn. I am glad/relieved to hear that.

It was said in passing by my new anti-coag nurse the other day that ibuprofin could affect INR. Tylenol sees OK (within FDA guidelines )

Jeanette, MMM!! Now I am challenged to look up the INR being affected by Ibuprofin. Thanks for sharing.
:) :)

Ibuprofen does not effect the INR #. It can contribute to a gastrointestinal bleed. So if you have gastro issues, I wouldn't take it. Of course - look for any signs of that kind of bleeding - dark, tar-like stools etc.

From day one I was told no ibuprofen. Then one of the PA's told me she takes it on coumadin. I guess like Karlynn said, its not good to take it if you have gastro issues. I take tylenol arthritis and if my fibro pain gets really bad a darvocet.

As long as you understand that you may be the cause of a gastro bleed because of taking it, then you can't yell at anyone if it does. We know we are not supposed to take it, but like I've said, I take what works, whether it's a no no or not.

This morning I woke with what seems to be a stomach bug, although I might need to schedule a doctor's appt because it seems that I've had too many of these lately and I usually have a stomach of steel. So, I reached for the Pepto. It's another no-no because of the aspirin, but I'm not going to grin and bear it and that's all we had available. If it doesn't get better soon, I'll send the hubby out for something else. Any recommendations? It's mostly stomach pain that's bothering me.
